Summary of 2024 HIV Estimates and Projections
In 2024, it is estimated that 334,721 people are living with HIV (PLHIV) in Ghana. During the same year, the country recorded approximately 15,290 new HIV infections and an estimated 12,614 AIDS-related deaths. At the regional level, the Greater Accra Region accounted for the largest number of people living with HIV, estimated at 77,821, representing 23.2% of the national total. It also recorded the highest number of new infections (3,436), followed by Ashanti (2,997) and Eastern (2,019) regions. The North East Region reported the lowest number of new infections, with an estimated 97 cases.
Progress toward the UNAIDS 95-95-95 targets continues, with Ghana achieving:
• 68% of people living with HIV know their status (1st 95),
• 69% of those diagnosed receiving antiretroviral therapy (2nd 95)
• 90% of those on treatment achieved viral suppression (3rd 95).
The adult HIV prevalence (ages 15–49) is 1.49%. On the regional front, Bono Region recorded the highest prevalence at 2.22%, while the North East Region had the lowest at 0.43%. At the district level, Accra Metropolis in the Greater Accra Region and Kumasi Metropolis in the Ashanti Region reported the highest numbers of PLHIV, estimated at 11,070 and 7,582, respectively. Dormaa East District in the Bono Region recorded the highest adult HIV prevalence at 5.36%.
