Ghana Beyond Subsistence

Ghana Beyond Subsistence The purpose for this collaborative project is to assist in building sustainable communities in Ghana through rural development, education, and service.

Ghana Beyond Subsistence (GBS) is registered tax-exempt under section 501(c)(3) of the IRS. The Ghana Research Tour (The Arts in Ghana with Community Development Service Learning) has several ongoing and new projects each year. For example:

1) Students participate in daily Drum, Dance, and Ewe Language classes;
2) Students teach Enrichment Classes at Rising Star Academy where students will teach

6th to 9th graders about Agriculture (Cody), Raising Chickens (Emily), Leadership (Gage), and Music (Jessica);
3) In conjunction with the Evangelical Presbyterian University College’s Engineering and Agriculture departments, students will work with consultant Jeremy Shechter (Farmtek/Iowa; 2014 Ohio State Ag Eng grad) on an Aquaponics Installation building a fish pond that circulates nutrient-rich water into a large vegetable grow bed;
4) With Dr. Nathan Crook, students will learn anthropological methods and interview 48 Storytellers in 8 small towns about the changing role of storytelling in modern Ghana;
5) Students participate in Microfinance meetings with out 10 ongoing micro-lending groups in villages (Kpenoe, Akrofu, Wegbe-Kpalime, Hodzo-Achianse, Akoefe)
6) With Mr. Dickson Asase (Ghanaian extension agent and all-around friend) students will provide Immunizations to about 1000 sheep, goats, and chickens in 8 villages (above plus Takla, Kpetoe, Adaklu);
7) Students will participate in Lecture-Discussions on many aspects of rural development, including climate change and reforestation and the Sustainable Development Goals, slavery’s effect on West Africa, Islamic-Christian relations, and Girls’ Education. Also, several Drum and Dance groups will perform and invite us to perform with them.
8) Students travel to Cape Coast to visit a Slave Castle and climb on the ropes course in Kakum Rainforest.
9) With Dr. Crook, Ohio State ATI and EP University students will engage in a series of discussions focusing on personal and professional leadership. I’m excited about our journey starting soon. Please log in and write something about your hopes for our adventure. Best, Dr. D

Agricultural improvement is one of the three pillars of Ghana Beyond Subsistence’s rural development agenda. Here, you can see the Hodzo-Achianse beekeepers demonstrating local honey production to our traveler group. Over the past year, GBS has assisted these farmers as they transition from traditional honey production methods to improved hive management.
