GFD We Can Work Team Visits Trainees Undergoing Technical Skills Training in Kasoa
The Ghana Federation of Disability Organisations (GFD) Programme team on June 10, 2026, conducted a routine monitoring visit to some graduates of the We Can Work Academy who opted to pursue technical and vocational skills training after completing the Core Life Skills (CLS) component of the programme.
The team’s first stop was at Sandyluv Cake House in Kasoa, where Constance Esi Badu is undertaking a three-month training programme in baking, cake decoration, and sugar craft. The training commenced in April 2026 and is expected to end in July 2026, after which she will be awarded a certificate upon successful completion.
Speaking about her experience training young persons with disabilities, the master trainer, Madam Sandra, expressed satisfaction with the process.
“The orientation and training I received before engaging persons with disabilities prepared me well for this role. It has helped me understand their needs better and enabled me to train them effectively.”
She also highlighted her practical approach to teaching.
“I focus heavily on practical sessions because I want my trainees to fully understand and master every skill I teach.”
Constance Esi Badu shared her appreciation for the support she receives from her trainer.
“My trainer treats me very well and gives me the attention I need during practical sessions. She makes a conscious effort to ensure I understand every step, and that has helped me learn quickly.”
The team’s next visit was to All Stitch Kouture, also in Kasoa, where two We Can Work trainees, Rosemary Asamoah and Abigail Aidoo, are undergoing training in fashion design.
The trainees expressed their excitement and gratitude for the opportunity to acquire employable skills. They thanked GFD and the We Can Work Programme for providing them with a pathway towards economic independence and decent work.
According to Abigail Aidoo:
“It has been a great privilege to go through the Core Life Skills training and now learn fashion design. The experience has boosted my confidence, and I am excited about the opportunities that lie ahead.”
Rosemary Asamoah said the training has given her renewed purpose and direction.
“Learning a trade has given me a sense of purpose. I now have valuable skills that will help me earn a decent living and become more independent.”
The master trainer at All Stitch Kouture, Madam Gertrude, noted that working with young persons with disabilities has been a rewarding experience.
“Training young persons with disabilities is no different from training any other young person. To support their learning, I created a WhatsApp platform where we share information, assignments, and learning materials. This helps them make the most of the four-month training programme.”
The We Can Work Programme, implemented in Ghana by the Ghana Federation of Disability Organisations (GFD), continues to empower young women and men with disabilities with the knowledge, skills, and opportunities needed to access decent and fulfilling work.
