GFD We Can Work Team Visits Trainees Undergoing Technical Skills Training in Kasoa

The Ghana Federation of Disability Organisations (GFD) Programme team on June 10, 2026, conducted a routine monitoring visit to some graduates of the We Can Work Academy who opted to pursue technical and vocational skills training after completing the Core Life Skills (CLS) component of the programme.

The team’s first stop was at Sandyluv Cake House in Kasoa, where Constance Esi Badu is undertaking a three-month training programme in baking, cake decoration, and sugar craft. The training commenced in April 2026 and is expected to end in July 2026, after which she will be awarded a certificate upon successful completion.

Speaking about her experience training young persons with disabilities, the master trainer, Madam Sandra, expressed satisfaction with the process.

“The orientation and training I received before engaging persons with disabilities prepared me well for this role. It has helped me understand their needs better and enabled me to train them effectively.”

She also highlighted her practical approach to teaching.

“I focus heavily on practical sessions because I want my trainees to fully understand and master every skill I teach.”

Constance Esi Badu shared her appreciation for the support she receives from her trainer.

“My trainer treats me very well and gives me the attention I need during practical sessions. She makes a conscious effort to ensure I understand every step, and that has helped me learn quickly.”

The team’s next visit was to All Stitch Kouture, also in Kasoa, where two We Can Work trainees, Rosemary Asamoah and Abigail Aidoo, are undergoing training in fashion design.

The trainees expressed their excitement and gratitude for the opportunity to acquire employable skills. They thanked GFD and the We Can Work Programme for providing them with a pathway towards economic independence and decent work.

According to Abigail Aidoo:

“It has been a great privilege to go through the Core Life Skills training and now learn fashion design. The experience has boosted my confidence, and I am excited about the opportunities that lie ahead.”

Rosemary Asamoah said the training has given her renewed purpose and direction.

“Learning a trade has given me a sense of purpose. I now have valuable skills that will help me earn a decent living and become more independent.”

The master trainer at All Stitch Kouture, Madam Gertrude, noted that working with young persons with disabilities has been a rewarding experience.

“Training young persons with disabilities is no different from training any other young person. To support their learning, I created a WhatsApp platform where we share information, assignments, and learning materials. This helps them make the most of the four-month training programme.”

The We Can Work Programme, implemented in Ghana by the Ghana Federation of Disability Organisations (GFD), continues to empower young women and men with disabilities with the knowledge, skills, and opportunities needed to access decent and fulfilling work.

First Batch of We Can Work Academy Begins Core Life Skills Training in Ashanti and Bono Regions

Young women and men with disabilities enrolled in the first cohort of the 2026 Academy have begun their Core Life Skills (CLS) training, marking an important step in their journey toward dignified employment.

The training commenced on Monday, June 1, 2026, and is being delivered simultaneously at three locations: the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) in Sunyani, Women’s Haven in Asokwa, Kumasi, and HapaSpace in Danyame, Kumasi.

Over the next six weeks, participants will undergo an intensive Core Life Skills programme designed to strengthen their confidence, self-awareness, communication abilities, and personal development. Upon completion, participants will transition into their preferred learning pathways, including Employability Skills Training, Entrepreneurship Training, or Technical Skills Training.

The opening sessions focused on a key module: Personal Understanding and exploration . Through this sessions, participants are encouraged to better understand and embrace their disabilities with confidence and dignity. The Tree of Life methodology is part of the Personal Understanding module and helps young persons with disabilities identify their strengths, reflect on their personal experiences, and draw on their resilience to build meaningful lives while contributing positively to society.

The training is being facilitated by MDF West Africa, a key partner in delivering the We Can Work Academy curriculum. The Academy equips young persons with disabilities with practical life, leadership, and workplace skills that support their transition into employment and entrepreneurship.

The We Can Work Academy is part of the broader We Can Work programme, a regional initiative that seeks to improve access to dignified and fulfilling work for young women and men with disabilities across Africa. The programme uses a systems and mindset change approach to address barriers to employment and economic participation while equipping participants with relevant life, leadership, and vocational skills.

In Ghana, the programme is implemented by the Ghana Federation of Disability Organisations in partnership with Light for the World, African Disability Forum, and Mastercard Foundation. The initiative aims to ensure that young persons with disabilities have the skills, opportunities, and support needed to access decent work, become successful entrepreneurs, and contribute meaningfully to national development.

As the first cohort embarks on this transformative learning journey, the Academy continues to demonstrate that disability is not a barrier to success when young people are provided with the right opportunities, skills, and support systems.

GFD Concludes Workshop on Disability Inclusion in Ghana’s Financial Sector.

Day Two of the Training of Trainers (ToT) workshop under the CapitalPlus programme, dubbed “Breaking Barriers: Advancing Disability Inclusion in Ghana’s Financial Sector,” ended today at the AH Hotel in Accra.

The workshop was held from June 1 and 2, 2026.

The workshop was designed to build institutional capacity for sustained disability inclusion among ten financial institutions, including Opportunity International Savings and Loans, Akuapem Rural Bank, Advans Ghana, Ahantaman Rural Bank, Maroon Capital, Pan-African Savings and Loans, Manya Krobo Rural Bank, Adehyeman Rural Bank, VisionFund Ghana, and Letshego Ghana. Representatives from the Bank of Ghana (BoG) and CapitalPlus also participated in the training.

The workshop is part of ongoing efforts to advance financial inclusion for persons with disabilities and support financial institutions to comply with the Bank of Ghana’s directives on inclusive and accessible financial services. Participants were equipped with practical tools and knowledge to promote disability-inclusive policies, products, and services within their institutions.

Participants expressed excitement about the insights gained during the training. A representative from Akuapem Rural Bank remarked, “Inclusion is a journey and has to start from somewhere. We all have a role.”

Another participant emphasized the importance of intentional action, stating that “Inclusion is not a CSR activity but a legal directive and a rights issue.” She further noted that intentionality is the way forward in ensuring meaningful inclusion within Ghana’s financial sector.

The workshop was implemented by the Ghana Federation of Disability Organisations (GFD) in partnership with CDC Consult, which served as co-facilitator for the training. Facilitators included Ms. Rebecca Nunoo, Senior Disability Inclusion Advisor at GFD, together with Ms. Stella Dzandu and Mr. Seraphim Tetteh of CDC Consult.

The training is another important step toward building a more inclusive financial sector where persons with disabilities can access and benefit from financial services on an equal basis with others.

The Ghana Federation of Disability Organisations (GFD) Programme team has commenced the profiling of participants in the first cohort of the 2026 We Can Work Academy in Sunyani, the Bono Regional Capital.

The profiling exercise serves as a baseline assessment to capture participants' current living conditions, socio-economic status, and employment circumstances before they begin the Academy.

The data gathered will provide a benchmark for measuring participants' progress and evaluating the impact of the programme over time.

The event also marked the official launch of the first cohort of the We Can Work Academy in the Bono Region. The launch was conducted by the National Vice President of GFD, Madam Sirina Mahamadu, with support from the Bono Rehgional President, Mr Owusu Ansah.

Madam Sirina encouraged participants to take full advantage of the opportunities offered through the Academy to enhance their skills, confidence, and employability.

Profiling for the second cohort of participants will be conducted at a later date as part of the programme's monitoring, evaluation, and learning activities.
