No woman should die while giving life.

The Vice President of Ghana, Her Excellency, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has launched the Presidential Initiative on Maternal Health Emergency Response, , driven by the SDG Advisory Unit at the Office of the President, NDPC, UNFPA Ghana and national partners.

The five-year initiative brings political leadership, accountability, financing, emergency response and intersectoral coordination behind one national goal: saving mothers and newborns.

PRIMER targets the systems that buy women time when every minute matters: ready theatres, available blood, functioning referrals, essential medicines, skilled staff and reliable data.

In attendance were the West and Central Africa Regional Director, Dr Sennen Hounton, Dr Wilfred Ochan, UNFPA Country Representative; Dr Nii Moi Thompson, NDPC Chair and Presidential Advisor on SDGs; the Ministers and Deputy Ministers of Health and Gender; UN Resident Coordinator Zia Choudhury; traditional rulers; Parliament; academia; civil society; and development partners, including Global Affairs Canada.

Together, we are carrying forward one commitment: every mother returns home safely with her baby.

On 14 September, UNFPA joins the the SDG Advisory Unit ate the Office of President, the of Health and the National Development Planning Commission as technical and strategic partners to launch PRIMER, the Presidential Initiative on Maternal Health Emergency Response.

This five-year national response strengthens political commitment, accountability, domestic financing, accelerated action and intersectoral coordination.

Ghana has expanded antenatal care and skilled delivery. Now, survival must match access.

Ghana is treating maternal death as what it is: an emergency.

On Monday, 14 September 2026 under the auspices of His Excellency the President, Ghana launches PRIMER — the Presidential Initiative on Maternal Health Emergency Response at The Dome, Alisa Hotel, Accra.

A five-year national response built on five pillars: political commitment and mobilisation, institutionalised accountability, sustainable domestic financing, the Maternal Mortality Reduction Accelerated Action and Response Programme, and intersectoral coordination.

Antenatal care and skilled delivery are near universal. Survival has not followed. PRIMER closes that gap.

A gender-friendly workplace must be felt, not simply written into policy.
UNFPA Ghana and Konfidants Ghana, are partnering to support institutions to turn workplace evidence into practical change.

Following gender-friendly workplace assessments, the Ghana Immigration Service, Standard Chartered Bank Ghana and the Ghana Hairdressers and Beauticians Association joined a capacity-building session focused on strengthening policies, systems and workplace practices. Three Key points stuck:
1. Workplaces are not neutral spaces. The policies, systems, leadership practices and cultures we create either reinforce inequalities or help dismantle them. There is no third option.

2. A gender-friendly workplace goes beyond having a policy on paper. It means equal opportunity to contribute, advance and lead; harassment and gender-based violence prevented and addressed; reproductive health needs recognised; care responsibilities accommodated; and employees able to raise concerns without fear of stigma or retaliation.

3. The measure of success is not the assessment report or the training. It is the tangible improvements employees actually experience. From awareness to action, from policies to implementation, from individual commitments to organisational change.

Participating institutions committed to go beyond assessment reports and training, and use the findings to strengthen accountability, prevent discrimination and harassment, support reproductive health and care needs, and create workplaces where employees can contribute, advance and speak up without fear.
