Ghana Music Rights Organization(GHAMRO) A COLLECTVE MANAGEMENT ORGANIZATION

The pioneering effort began as a private initiative in the 1970’s to collect royalties on behalf of a limited number of copyright owners. This effort unfortunately did not yield the desired results and subsequently the existing law was replaced with PNDC Law 110, which established the Copyright Society of Ghana (COSGA) in 1986 as an umbrella organization for all creative works. The Society functio

ned successfully for twenty six years (26) after which the law was amended to conform to provisions of the 1992 Constitution and a new Copyright Act 690 passed. Subsequently the Copyright Society of Ghana (COSGA) was liquidated and a new organization christened the “Ghana Music Rights Organization” (GHAMRO) was formed in December, 2012. GHAMRO took over the administration of the music rights of the erstwhile Copyright Society of Ghana with an interim Board for two years. The Board successfully served its term and currently a five member Receiver Manager has been appointed by the High Court of Ghana which is overseeing the restructuring and operations.
