CEPIL, in collaboration with Oxfam in Ghana under the Fair Finance Project, kicked off a Legal Literacy Training on Mining Frameworks and Compensation Rights at the Asutifi North District Assembly Hall.

Community leaders, farmers, landowners, women, youth, persons with disabilities, and civil society actors have come together to unpack what Ghana’s mining laws actually say, what compensation rights communities are entitled to, and how to negotiate fairly when livelihoods are affected.

From understanding the legal frameworks to practical negotiation strategies, today is about knowledge as power and ensuring mining-affected communities are informed, confident, and organised.

Collaborating with communities - one at a time.
Last week Friday, CEPIL joined Wacam and Oxfam in Ghana in Kenyasi for a validation workshop focused on human rights and environmental concerns in mining communities in the Ahafo and Akyem areas.

Community participants shared real concerns about Newmont’s continued expansion and the growing anxiety this creates for families and livelihoods. Many said that learning about the impacts faced by other affected communities was unsettling and deepened their call for stronger protections.

The workshop created space for honest discussions on human rights violations, environmental risks, fair compensation, and resettlement challenges. Participants also learned about Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC) and how it should guide community engagement in Ghana’s mining sector.

CEPIL remains committed to working with partners and communities to defend rights, strengthen accountability, and promote responsible governance in Ghana’s extractive sector.

In two days, CEPIL will join Wacam and Oxfam in Ghana in Kenyasi for a validation workshop on human rights in mining communities within the Ahafo and Akyem project areas.
The session will bring community representatives, civil society actors, and local stakeholders together to review findings, share lived experiences, and shape practical recommendations that strengthen accountability and community protections in Ghana’s extractive sector.

This work matters. Communities in mining areas deserve safety, dignity, and a fair say in decisions that affect their land and livelihoods. By listening, validating evidence, and co-creating solutions, we can support stronger policy actions that protect people and promote responsible resource governance.

We look forward to the discussions and to advancing community-driven justice together with our partners in the extractives and governance space.

Mining has shaped Obuasi’s economy, but also left deep struggles for farmers and households displaced from their land. Many continue to face unfair compensation, complex legal systems, and barriers to justice.

This morning in Obuasi, CEPIL with CeSIS and Oxfam in Ghana are launching a new Twi Infographic Guide on Land Compensation Laws. This resource translates the law into plain Twi with visuals, making it accessible to communities most affected by mining.

The launch also highlights CEPIL’s expanded legal support for human rights and environmental violations, including space for dialogue with local leaders and testimonies from affected communities.

This event marks an important step toward empowered communities, fairer negotiations, and more accountable governance in Ghana’s cocoa and mining areas.
