Creating Sustainable Businesses That Solve Social Problems
On Tuesday, 15th September 2026, the Heritage Christian University community came together for its General Assembly to explore the theme “Creating Sustainable Businesses That Solve Social Problems.”
Dr. Ekow Alexander Asmah began his presentation with a simple yet thought-provoking question: “List some social problems around us.” The question sparked an engaging conversation about some of the challenges confronting Ghana, with unemployment emerging as one of the most significant concerns.
Every year, thousands of graduates enter the workforce, yet the availability of formal employment opportunities continues to fall short of the demand.
Dr. Asmah encouraged a shift in perspective, from waiting for employment opportunities to creating opportunities through entrepreneurship. He challenged students to pay attention to the problems within their communities and explore innovative ways to turn those challenges into sustainable business solutions. By doing so, young people can not only create sources of income for themselves but also generate employment opportunities for others.
To demonstrate the potential of entrepreneurship, Dr. Asmah shared the inspiring story of a trotro mate who started with very little but, through determination and enterprise, eventually became a bus owner and employer. His journey highlighted how creativity, resilience, and a willingness to take initiative can transform an individual’s circumstances and positively impact others.
This message aligns closely with Heritage Christian University’s annual initiatives, including Impact Week and the Start-Up Challenge. These programs provide students with opportunities to identify pressing social challenges, develop innovative solutions, and transform their ideas into viable businesses. Beyond encouraging entrepreneurship, the initiatives reflect HCU’s commitment to equipping students with the skills and mindset needed to become problem-solvers, innovators, and change-makers.
Through meaningful conversations, practical initiatives, and opportunities for innovation, Heritage Christian University continues to inspire a generation of young leaders to view society’s challenges through a different lens, not simply as problems to overcome, but as opportunities to create sustainable businesses, empower others, and contribute to the development of a stronger Ghana.
