For two seasons, Ebenezer watched birds strip his rice fields before harvest. The losses were so consistent that he nearly gave up growing rice.

Then, through Entrepreneurship Management Training under the BRIDGE-in-Agriculture Program, he built his own solution: a solar-powered device that uses motion sensors and sound to scare birds away, helping him protect his crops without relying on costly manual methods.

The solution protected his harvest and helped grow his business. Ebenezer’s team has expanded from 10 workers to 13, with three new hires, all young women, in a region where farm work is still often seen as men’s work.

Today, alongside 15 acres of rice, maize, and vegetables, he provides threshing and harvesting services to neighbouring smallholder farmers who might otherwise struggle to access these services.

One solution to a single challenge is now to protect harvests, create jobs, and serve farms beyond his own.

What happens when young people start looking at their environment differently?

At Accra Academy Senior High School, that journey began with the Opportunity Mindset Masterclass, the first engagement under the ASH Africa Youth Engagement Series (AYES) aligned with International Youth Day.

We explored a simple but powerful idea: an opportunity can begin with a problem, an idea, or simply the willingness to ask, “What if?”

Students were challenged to think differently, spot opportunities around them, and turn curiosity, creativity, and action into tools to shape their future.

Because while our contexts may be different, our aspirations are common: to create, to contribute, and to build a better future.

This marks the beginning of AYES, launched as part of ASH Africa’s 10th Anniversary programming.

Two months ago, we began a new chapter as ASH Africa.

Since then, our focus has remained exactly where it has always been: creating pathways that connect youth, women, and SMEs to opportunity.

Across our programmes and partnerships, that commitment has remained constant. Through initiatives such as the BRIDGE-in Agriculture program and our partnership in the National Apprenticeship Programme (NAP), we have continued to expand access to skills, enterprise opportunities, and sustainable livelihoods for communities across Ghana.

Under NAP, we supported the rollout of classroom-based learning across nearly 40 Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies, while, through BRIDGE-in Agriculture, we continue to strengthen opportunities for youth and women in the agricultural ecosystem.

Behind these initiatives are real stories of progress: young people building skills for their futures, women growing enterprises, and communities gaining new pathways to economic opportunity.

The name has evolved to reflect our broader continental vision and strategic direction, but our purpose remains the same:

Transforming Lives. Impacting Communities. Building Africa.

Thank you to our partners, beneficiaries, and supporters who continue to be part of this journey.

In Agona East District, beneficiaries under the National Apprenticeship Programme (NAP) explored what it means to think like an entrepreneur. From identifying opportunities to maintaining sound business records and applying marketing principles, the sessions focused on building practical business skills that support sustainable enterprises.

Every lesson is another step towards building practical skills that last beyond the classroom.

Implemented by the National Youth Authority (NYA), NAP's classroom-based learning component is supported by ASH Africa to help beneficiaries turn knowledge into practical capabilities.
