Combat wildlife trafficking and enhance great ape conservation; reduce deforestation, forest degradation, and biodiversity loss in key transboundary forest landscapes; and reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increase carbon sequestration from land use. The West Africa Biodiversity and Low Emissions Development (WABiLED) Program is a four-year program funded by the United States Agency for Internat

ional Development (USAID) with 3 core objectives: combat wildlife trafficking and enhance great ape conservation; reduce deforestation, forest degradation, and biodiversity loss in key transboundary forest landscapes; and reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increasing carbon sequestration from land use. To achieve these ambitious objectives, WABiLED will work with partners to strengthen the capacity of national and regional networks and institutions to enforce and prosecute wildlife trafficking laws across the region; implement regional and transboundary cooperation and biodiversity conservation strategies in the key forested countries of Guinea, Liberia, Cote d’Ivoire, and Sierra Leone; and improve capacity for economic planning and development of low emissions development strategies to reduce West Africa’s greenhouse gas emissions thus contributing to national and global climate commitments.

WABiLED recently worked with Liberia’s Forestry Development Authority (FDA) by supporting a training aimed to strengthen the agency's capacity to incorporate Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI) principles into its policies and operations. This partnership is vital in aligning Liberia’s forestry management with inclusive practices that empower women, youth, and other marginalized groups to play an active role in addressing climate change and conserving biodiversity. Last month, representatives from Liberia and Sierra Leone gathered in Ganta, Liberia for a transformative workshop that would reshape approaches to local forest conservation and climate mitigation. The workshop was an effort to bridge the profound capacity gaps that often prevents forest communities from meaningfully participating in national and global conservation and climate change mitigation efforts. Strengthening Local Voices, Empowering Communities for a Greener Liberia

Community leaders from the forests of Gola, Wonegizi-Wologizi, and Grebo-Krahn-Sapo gathered in Monrovia for a groundbreaking workshop on November 25, 2024. Organized by the Liberia Land Authority and WABiLED, the event marked a pivotal step in sustainable land management in Liberia.

Over four days, Community Land Development and Management Committees (CLDMCs) collaborated with policymakers, private sector representatives, and traditional leaders to strengthen institutional capacity, address land tenure challenges, and champion inclusive land use practices.

We are excited to see inclusive collaboration between customary landowners, policymakers, and private sector partners. Together with the Liberia Land Authority and community members, we recognize that secure land tenure doesn’t just protect communities; it unlocks opportunities for sustainable growth and responsible investment. Climate change and environmental pressures like drought, flooding, and food insecurity disproportionately impact women, girls, and Indigenous peoples, exacerbating gender-based violence (GBV). Conflicts over land rights and resource use are a major driver of GBV, with women often facing violence in struggles for control over land and property.

GBV doesn’t just harm individuals—it undermines conservation efforts. Programs that fail to consider the unique challenges women face in their communities risk reinforcing inequalities rather than promoting equity. Even conservation organizations themselves are not immune, with staff often exposed to GBV.

At WABiLED, we recognize these critical connections and embed human rights and behavior change approaches in our work. By addressing GBV and advocating for gender equality in conservation and land use, we aim to create sustainable, inclusive solutions where people and the planet thrive.

This campaign, let’s recommit to building a future free of violence, inequality, and environmental injustice.

We're here on Day 2 of our "Training of Trainers" workshop in Accra, with transport and finance experts from across West Africa learning about their roles in combatting wildlife trafficking within their respective industries. Over the course of the week, these experts will be immersed in everything wildlife trafficking-related, from human rights considerations, to counter-corruption practices and coordination techniques.

This training follows earlier training programs held in Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana, Liberia, Nigeria, and Togo for the broader logistics and finance industries. The long-term goal of this workshop is to scale the training program through these experts and ultimately raise awareness across the industries on the illegal wildlife trade. If we want to be successful in bringing the illicit trade to an end, we must bet on an inter-sectorial approach to coordination and law enforcement.
