In this powerful documentary, director Gertrude Malizeni sheds light on the realities faced by women workers in Tanzania’s labor market. “Mama Mishe” documents the daily working conditions of women in the informal sector, exposing the instability, lack of legal protections, limited access to social security, and economic vulnerability they navigate. At the same time, it highlights their resilience, entrepreneurship, and determination in the face of structural inequality.

The movie was selected as part of the “Give to Gain – and Popcorn!” series by the FES Gender Justice Competence Centre, reaffirming our commitment to advancing inclusive labor systems where women’s work — whether formal or informal — is valued, protected, and empowered.

Misikir , is our first film in the FES Gender Justice Competence Centre “Give to Gain – and Popcorn!” film series.

Misikir — “witness” in Amharic — film embodies the act of bearing witness to the profound consequences of conflict on women's dignity, safety, and survival. The film bears witness to the unique and deeply gendered ways in which women and girls have been affected by the conflicts that erupted in November 2020 in the regional state of Tigray and later spread to the regional states of Amhara and Afar in northern Ethiopia. It also sheds light on the ongoing impact of intercommunal violence in the Oromia regional state on women's lives and livelihoods.

In the context of International Women's Day 2026, and under the theme “Give to gain,” Misikir reminds us that when women's experiences are recognized and placed at the centre, societies gain truth, awareness, and the necessary momentum for change. Witnessing is not a passive act—it is a political and transformative act. By listening to women, amplifying their voices, and recognizing their agency, we contribute to building more just, accountable, and inclusive societies.

“Give to Gain” speaks to a powerful truth: a true and just transformation requires collective compromise and investment. When women’s voices are amplifies, when institutions recognize their leadership, and when societies legitimize women and feminist movements, we all benefit - stronger democracies, safer communities, and more inclusive development.
