From July 21-23, 2026, key members of the Opportunities Pathways for Entrepreneurship in Cocoa (OpEN) Project team from CARE Ghana, led by Country Director Mr. Michael Alandu, joined colleagues from CARE International en Côte d'Ivoire, CARE International UK, Global VSLA technical team from CARE , and other partners for a three-day 𝗢𝗽𝗘𝗡 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗔𝗱𝗮𝗽𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗽 in Côte d'Ivoire.
The workshop provided an opportunity to reflect on the project's progress, review lessons from implementation, and realign strategies to strengthen entrepreneurship pathways for women and vulnerable households in cocoa-growing communities. Discussions focused on improving access to finance, expanding market opportunities, strengthening business development support, and leveraging digital solutions to help rural entrepreneurs build sustainable businesses.
The CARE Ghana also shared valuable experiences from its agent-led community support model, which has strengthened relationships between communities and financial institutions. This approach was recognized as a promising learning opportunity as the OpEN project enters its next phase across both countries.
Together, CARE remains committed to fostering innovation, deepening collaboration, and creating inclusive economic opportunities that empower women entrepreneurs, strengthen household resilience, and contribute to more sustainable cocoa communities.

Last week, the Daakye Regenerative Integrated School Meals Programme held a capacity-building training on AttendAssist, an AI-powered digital platform transforming how student attendance is tracked, verified, and reported.
With features like:
✅ QR Code-based attendance capture
✅ WhatsApp integration for seamless photo submission
✅ AI-powered dashboard for real-time data analysis
✅ Real-time decision support for timely action..AttendAssist is helping make attendance tracking more accurate, transparent, and accountable.
The training brought together 13 teacher representatives and school meal catering supervisors from Asamankese, equipping them with the skills to confidently use the platform to monitor and report students' daily attendance.
This is part of our continued commitment to strengthening data-driven decision-making in school feeding delivery. 🌱

📱 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀, 𝗨𝗻𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗢𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 🌱

As part of the Digital to Credit Initiative, CARE Ghana recently conducted a VSLA Digitization Readiness Assessment to determine the preparedness of selected Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs) to transition from the traditional paper-based record keeping to a more digital record keeping system.

This assessment highlights CARE Ghana's commitment to leveraging digital innovation to enhance financial inclusion and strengthen the resilience of savings groups. 💚

🎯 60 VSLAs in total, were successfully assessed, revealing varying levels of digital readiness among the groups. The assessment examined key areas including:

📱 Smartphone access
💻 Digital literacy
📶 Network connectivity
🤝 Group governance and general group practices
📲 Members' capacity to adopt digital financial tools

The findings of the assessment will guide targeted capacity-building and technical support, ensuring that every participating group is supported and equipped to confidently transition from paper-based records to secure digital financial management. ✅

🌍At CARE, digitizing VSLAs is not just about introducing technology. It is about expanding access to financial services 💰, strengthening transparency 🔍, building digital financial histories 📈, and creating pathways to formal credit for savings group members. 👩🏾‍🌾✨

𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗟𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲-𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻
As part of the Akosombo Loss and Damage Funding Programme (AkoLAD), a two-day capacity-building workshop was organized for 20 local artisans in Mepe, North Tongu District equipping masons, carpenters, plumbers, and electricians with practical skills in climate-smart and flood-resilient construction.
The training focused on:
• Climate-resilient housing repair techniques
• Appropriate cement selection and application
• Foundation design based on site conditions
• Improved collaboration across construction trades.
Some key highlights include
✔️ Strengthened local capacity for climate-resilient housing
✔️ Ongoing technical support from the District Engineering Department
✔️ Formation of a new artisan association to support future emergency response

NB: AkoLAD is a Ghana-specific loss and damage funding programme funded by the Climate Vulnerable Forum and V20 Finance Ministers (CVF-V20) Joint Multi Donor Fund (JMDF).
The goal of the project is to restore loss and damages incurred by communities affected by the Akosombo dam spillage and make communities more resilient to future flooding.

As part of his 3-day visit, the CARE’s interim Regional Director for West and Central Africa, David Wright, visited the Sunyani West Municipality to interact with stakeholders of the Affordable Agricultural Financing for Resilient Rural Development Project (AAFORD) project. Mr. Wright was in the company of the Country Director, Mr, Michael Alandu and Head of Programmes, Mr. Zakaria Yakubu together with the AAFORD project team.
Highlights included:
✅ An engagement with the Project Coordination Unit (PCU) in Sunyani where discussions covered project progress, key milestones, and emerging challenges.
✅ A courtesy call to the Sunyani West Municipal Agricultural Department, where the team received first-hand perspectives on how AAFORD project supporting the municipality to transform agriculture in the municipality.
✅ A community visit to Timber Nkwanta, where the team connected directly with project participants to gather first hand information how the keyhole garden model is improving household nutrition and overall wellbeing.

CARE Regional Director for Western and Central Africa Field Visit Highlight, CARE Ghana

This week, CARE International's Regional Director for West & Central Africa, David Wright, joined Country Director Michael Alandu and Head of Programs, Dr. Yakubu Zakaria on a three-day field visit to CARE operational communities within the southern and middle belt in Ghana.

The team visited two communities under the PROSPER projectl and what they found was nothing short of inspiring.

At Assin Ayibo, Assin South District (Central Region) the team enaged Thirty-four women running a thriving gari processing business. Equipped with modern processing equipment through PROSPER, they have scaled up production, reduced the physical burden of processing, and are now earning income to support themselves and their families. The most inspiring was their willingness to raise a structure by themselves to receive the processing equipment.

At KD Sresso, Atwima Mponua District (Ashanti Region)
Here, the Community Development and Child Protection Committee - established by CARE through PROSPER - is doing an amazing work. The committee stepped in to provide school uniforms, books, pens, canteen bowls and bottles to children who had dropped out of school due to lack of basic needs. Working alongside the community's queen-mother, Nana Yaa Akua. Nkawie Adonten Heema II and other traditional leaders, they passed a community by-law to ensure children are indoors by 9pm and hold parents accountable. They also spearheaded the construction of a toilet facility and a changing room for girls because safe spaces matter.

The team later met with the leadership of the Atwima Mponua Municipal Assembly, including the DCE, Hon. Ibrahim Issahak, DCD, Mr. Samuel K. Gyang, Planning Officer, and Director of Agriculture. Country Director Michael Alandu commended the community's efforts and called on the Assembly to deepen its support to the communities. David Wright, the Refional Director, noted the strong sense of ownership the communities have taken over their own development - something he said was deeply encouraging to witness.

The Assembly, in turn, praised CARE for its collaborative, community-centred approach.

This is what sustainable development looks like - not done for communities, but with them.

Today, we celebrate Alhaji Alhassan Mohammed Mutala our incredible Senior Driver who has been a key member of our operations for 25 remarkable years. Through changing roads, seasons, and challenges, his commitment has never wavered. He shows up, he delivers, and he does it with professionalism that inspires everyone around him.
25 years isn't just a number, it signifies thousands of safe journeys, countless miles, and an unwavering standard of service that defines who we are as an organization. Our appreciation to Alhaji Mutala for his loyalty, hard work, and for being a living example of what it means to grow with a team.

To ensure a stronger collaboration, strengthened coordination, alignment of priorities and a common understanding of project implementation, the Cocoa Sustainability Initiative – CSI V project team met with key district government collaborators in Assin Fosu for an annual workplan review meeting. Among those present were representatives – at the district level - from Business Advisory Center (BAC), Forestry Commission, Cocoa Health Extension Division (CHED), Seed Production Division (SPD), Department of Social Welfare and Community Development, Gender Desk, Ghana Education Service (GES), Ghana Health Service (GHS), Department of Agriculture, and the Planning Unit of Assin Fosu Municipal Assembly.

The participants reviewed and agreed on Year 1 priorities, clarified roles and identified points of collaboration. The project team is looking forward to working effectively with these stakeholders to drive real impact for women, children, and cocoa-farming households across 10 communities in the Assin Fosu Municipal area.

𝗪𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗮𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗵 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗽𝗵𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗥𝗢𝗦𝗣𝗘𝗥 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁, 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗶𝗹𝗹.
This week, our team gathered with government officials, community leaders, farmer groups, and partners in Sefwi Akontombra, Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai and Sefwi Wiawso Municipal, for the PROSPER IV Inception Meeting, a milestone that marks the official start of the project. PROSPER IV builds on the transformative achievements of Phases I–III. This new phase expands our reach to 128 communities, introducing 20 new communities in Juaboso District, Akontombra District, Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai District and Sefwi Wiawso Municipal. The project now covers communities in Western North, Central and Ashanti regions.
The inception meeting brought together the aforementioned stakeholders to align on the project's goals, implementation plan and the community engagement strategy. The energy, commitment, and shared ownership demonstrated by all stakeholders gives us great confidence in what we will achieve together as we promote improvement in livelihood diversification and income generation, increase women’s participation in decision-making and protection of children against child labour.

We are geared up for the future!!!
