This week, our team gathered with government officials, community leaders, farmer groups, and partners in Sefwi Akontombra, Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai and Sefwi Wiawso Municipal, for the PROSPER IV Inception Meeting, a milestone that marks the official start of the project. PROSPER IV builds on the transformative achievements of Phases Iโ€“III. This new phase expands our reach to 128 communities, introducing 20 new communities in Juaboso District, Akontombra District, Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai District and Sefwi Wiawso Municipal. The project now covers communities in Western North, Central and Ashanti regions.
The inception meeting brought together the aforementioned stakeholders to align on the project's goals, implementation plan and the community engagement strategy. The energy, commitment, and shared ownership demonstrated by all stakeholders gives us great confidence in what we will achieve together as we promote improvement in livelihood diversification and income generation, increase womenโ€™s participation in decision-making and protection of children against child labour.

We are geared up for the future!!!

Meet Theresah Ntokor from Yawmetwa in the Bia West district. Before participating in the OpEN project training on Business Skills and Financial Management, she had a quiet dream and enough savings to act on it. But confidence was the missing ingredient. As a clothes and wholesale egg vendor in Yawmetwa, she was hauling stock in small batches, limited by the cost and unreliability of hired transport. One to two boxes of egg crates was her ceiling.
The training changed her relationship with her own business.
Through sessions on record-keeping, financial planning, and digital tools, Theresah found her footing. With a clear plan in hand, she made the decision she had long been holding back: she purchased a GHโ‚ต25,500 tricycle entirely from her own savings and earnings, no loan, no credit facility.
Today, Theresah sells between 25 and 30 crates of eggs every week and makes up to GHS 6,000.00 every month through her business and additional income through renting of her tricycle.

Yesterday, at the World Cocoa Foundation Partnership Meeting in Amsterdam our Country Director, Mr. Michael Alandu joined other industry leaders for a discussion on
In a speech delivered at a breakout session, Michael re-echoed the complexity of the challenges in the cocoa sector and how innovative actions that go beyond saving models like the village savings and loans associations to create real entrepreneurship pathways are key drivers of transformation.
โ€œFor nearly two decades, Iโ€™ve seen firsthand how complex the challenges in the cocoa sector truly are - Income insecurity. Gender inequality. Limited access to finance. Increasing climate and regulatory pressures. Weโ€™ve invested heavily as an industry, yet the living income gap persists.
One of the most powerful innovations Iโ€™ve witnessed is the Village Savings and Loan Association (VSLA) model. What started as a community-level intervention has grown into a proven pathway for womenโ€™s economic empowerment, financial resilience, and income diversification. It works.
But increasingly, Iโ€™m hearing a new question from partners:
"๐’๐จ ๐ฐ๐ก๐š๐ญโ€™๐ฌ ๐ง๐ž๐ฑ๐ญ?"
Savings alone are not enough. If we are serious about transformation, we must build real entrepreneurship pathways, unlock tailored finance especially for women, and break down the silos that keep projects fragmented and short-term.
Through initiatives like the Opportunity Pathway for Entrepreneurship (OP-EN), co-designed with industry partners, CARE is exploring how to move beyond pilots toward systems change. Not just linking farmers to finance, but reshaping financial systems to work for them.
The cocoa sector doesnโ€™t need more isolated projects - It needs bold collaboration and scalable innovation.
