World Earth Day Recap: 🌍✨

What started as a beach clean-up turned into a powerful reminder of collective action. Alongside dedicated citizens, CSOs, and volunteers, we tackled our biggest challenge yet: a massive, tangled heap of washed-up waste. It took patience and “all hands on deck,” but we cleared the shore.

Beyond the trash bags, this was a space to reconnect. In the rush of daily projects, we rarely get to just be with one another. The biggest takeaway for us at GYEM? True change isn’t a giant leap, it’s the result of many small, steady steps taken together.

🌊 A Major Win for Ghana’s Oceans 🇬🇭

After years of advocacy and collective effort, Ghana has established its first-ever Marine Protected Area—covering 703 square kilometres in the Greater Cape Three Points area.

This vital ecosystem serves as a spawning and nursery ground for small pelagic fish, and is home to marine mammals and endangered sea turtles. Its protection marks a critical step toward restoring fish populations, safeguarding biodiversity, and strengthening coastal livelihoods.

What makes this milestone even more powerful is that 21 local communities were at the heart of the process—helping to identify key fishing and breeding grounds. This is what inclusive, community-led conservation looks like.

At GYEM, we celebrate this progress while recognizing that this is only the beginning. Protecting our oceans requires sustained commitment, strong governance, and continued community engagement.

🌱 Let’s keep pushing for a healthier, more resilient marine ecosystem for generations to come.

Thank you all for participating.

The final session of the Dialogue brought the conversation to where it truly matters, the ground.

From grassroots innovators to everyday practices, one thing is clear: the solutions already exist.

What we saw were not ideas waiting to be tested, but systems already being practiced, quietly, consistently, and often without recognition.

This shifts the question from “Are we ready?” to
👉 “Why are we still hesitating?”

The responsibility now is not just to listen, but to act.

♻️ The Digital Contest is open.
Show how you are reducing, reusing, or refusing single-use plastics in your daily life.

Should water brands invest in indigenous R&D?

Before plastic, Ghana had already solved the packaging problem.
Water was sold by the cup from clay pots and communal tanks in lorry stations and markets — managed by women known as waterwomen, who provided safe access and dignified livelihoods across our communities.

Then came sachet/bottle water.
The transition was rapid, total, and uncompensated. A system built on sustainability and culture was replaced by one built for convenience and profit.

Single-use plastics did not improve our environment — they improved the pockets of manufacturers and distributors.

The real cost? Our rivers, our fisheries, our streets, and our indigenous knowledge.
And we are still paying for it.

This needs to change.
We don’t need more plastic bottles.
We need water refilling systems — built for today, inspired by what already worked.

The same distribution networks can drive this shift.
Tag a water brand. Let’s move from throwaway to refill. ♻️
