Our Story
The FRISS Literacy Foundation was established as a non-profitable organization focused on improving the quality of life for all Ghanaians through the power of literacy. It was founded with the passion to improve the lives of disadvantaged children by providing inspiring book collections and engaging literacy programs to underfunded schools, libraries and organization across the nation. Friss Literacy Foundation aspires to empower and embolden every last child in Ghana through a culture of reading. We represent a crucial link to a strong literacy education, and our programs help build and nurture support systems that these children may be lacking elsewhere in their lives. By immersing children in an integrated world of literacy experiences that teaches them, firsthand; the basic of literacy and impact of reading on every aspect of life, imagination is ignited and confidence is built for a prosperous future, regardless of their ethnic background, economic status, or personal capabilities. FRISS Literacy Foundation advocate for reading as fundamental right for every child in Ghana, All should have the basic of education. FLF strongly believe that, when a person is known illiterate or has a low-level literacy skills, it negatively impacts successful life. Illiteracy denies a person the ability to reach his/her full potential. School dropout and unemployment rates, lower income levels, poverty, and poor health can all be linked to illiteracy in our societies. All these are the reasons why, we have taken the initiative of expanding the awareness of the values of literacy and building the capacity of children in deprived communities across the nation. We mobilized community resources, funding, volunteers and services to help these children master in reading and other basic literacy skills. Our programs aim at increasing the rate of school going children and inculcating the habit of reading in all Ghanaians both young and old. Reading must be elevated as an imperative for every man, woman and child. We, therefore encourage individual philanthropists, corporate bodies, organizations, government to become an active partner with FLF in solving the common problem in our lives. The foundation uses a three way approach to promote its literacy program 1. Cultural literacy: Connecting people particularly indigenous people to their cultural root and traditional language (Teaching Social Skills) • Emotional intelligence: The combination of the ability to understand and manage one’s own emotional state. • Multiple intelligence: The ability to understand and respond to other people 2. Practical literacy: Developing the skills needed for daily activities and living • Emotional Literacy (Relationship Special Education): Teaching the children to name and recognize emotions for social success. • Children and savings (Teaching children to manage their finances and adapt to saving habits): Children who learn to save at an early age have a greater advantage in life. 3. English literacy: Promoting skills in English reading, writing, speaking and listening. • Literacy skills: They are the skills needed for reading and writing. They include such things as awareness of the sounds of language, awareness of print and the relationship between letters and sounds. Other literacy skills include vocabulary, spelling and comprehension. • Deaf Literacy: Make literacy resources available for teaching Deaf children English. FRISS literacy foundation is managed by Local/ indigenous literacy managers and community volunteers. These individuals are selected based on their in-depth knowledge in child psychology and education. The foundation is a charitable organization and it is funded through sponsorships, fundraising and donations. FRISS literacy foundation will work within five specific programs which are; 1. Book supply: with this culturally appropriate books would be supplied to these under privilege kids in the rural and peri-urban communities. 2. School buzz: Within the broader context of book supply, we endeavor in selected communities to work closely with elders, families, schools to build a strong platform for literacy. In these, a scholarship scheme will be instituted for the very disadvantage children in deprived and peri-urban communities to fund their education through the university or tertiary level. The awards shall be given on merits, based on our background assessment, individual child commitment and participation span of Friss literacy weekend study session not less than six months and reaching appreciable level of proficiency in English. (Between 8 and 15yrs). A Drawstring Bag for preschoolers, shall also be initiated. Some of the story books in this bag will be in the child’s first language base in the community. Our volunteers do follow up in homes and schools of these kids to access the progress and impact of the project. The aim of this, is to increase school enrollment. 3. FLF annually organized a story writing challenge for community and school going children, entitled MY COMMUNITY STORY. A child’s story will be selected and published by the foundation. The aim is to introduce the pleasure of writing and publishing of children’s own story in our nation. 4. The great book swap/Book fair: This is a program whereby children from different community schools come together to exchange story books. This is to encourage children to read at least five different story books within a semester. 5. Indigenous Literacy Day: Is an annual event to celebrate the foundation, it’s achievement and also discuss its drawbacks and how to improve on them. This program shall also ensures that, children under the FL foundation are brought together to socialize and have fun.
