SOS Children's Villages in Ghana

SOS Children's Villages in Ghana SOS Children’s Villages Ghana is a non-profit, non-governmental, social development organisation

SOS Children’s Villages in Ghana is the local branch of an international humanitarian organization that provides abandoned and destitute children with safe, stable homes and loving families. These families live in clusters of about 10 to 15 family houses integrated into existing communities. Children stay with their SOS families in these Villages until they are grown, and they leave equipped with

good education,
motivation and the strength of a stable and supportive family. In Ghana, the first SOS Children’s Village was established in 1974 at Tema to cater for the needs of abandoned Ghanaian children. Over the years, three more villages have been built in Asiakwa, Kumasi and Tamale and over 450 children have found a loving home in our villages.

The commitment to protect children in the Sene west continues
This time, our attention turned to the very reason this project exists. Children are at the centre of the “Protecting Children at Risk of Losing Parental Care” project.

Alongside forming Child Rights Clubs in selected schools, our team and our local implementing partner SEARCH FOR RURAL DEVELOPMENT met students classroom by classroom. We listened, learned, and discussed the meaning of child protection in their everyday lives. Together, we explored their rights to education, care, and safety, and their responsibility to show respect, practice empathy, stay informed, and speak up when something is wrong. We encouraged them to see themselves as advocates for safer, stronger schools and communities.

We introduced students to the Unit Committees, Community Child Protection Committees, and the District Child Protection Committee established under the project. These structures work closely with families and schools to safeguard every child.

Each question and contribution from the children affirmed a simple truth. Child protection begins with knowledge and empowerment. When children understand their rights and responsibilities, they are equipped to claim their dignity, protect their peers, and influence the communities they deserve.

This initiative is funded by the Government of Norway through Norad and supported by SOS-barnebyer (SOS Children’s Villages in Norway). We are reaffirming our shared commitment to developing robust, inclusive, and responsive child protection systems, ensuring that no child is left behind.

The commitment to keep every child safe continues in the Sene West District of the Bono East Region. In partnership with the Sene West District Assembly, we held a capacity-building session for the District Child Protection Committee and the steering committee.

Under the “Protecting Children at Risk of Losing Parental Care” project, the training strengthened participants’ understanding of Ghana’s child protection legal framework, while enhancing coordination, collaboration, and accountability among local actors. Participants developed action plans to respond effectively to child protection risks in their districts.

This project was made possible through funding from the Government of Norway through Norad and supported by SOS-barnebyer (SOS Children’s Villages in Norway). The project reinforces our shared commitment to building strong, inclusive, and responsive child protection systems, so no child is left behind.

It takes a community to protect a child.

In the Sene West District of the Bono East Region, this belief is coming to life! Through our “Protecting Children at Risk of Losing Parental Care” project, we, together with the Sene West District Assembly, have been strengthening local child protection systems and structures to ensure that no child is left behind.

Because every child deserves to grow up in a safe and nurturing environment, we are building communities that care for, protect, and act in the best interests of children’s welfare. We have now built their capacities to identify, respond to, and prevent situations that put children at risk.

This effort forms part of our broader goal to ensure that community-based child protection structures and local institutions work hand-in-hand to keep children safe, supported, and included in local development.

And we’re not done yet! Tomorrow, we will be training the District Child Protection Committee and the District Steering Committee to further strengthen collaboration and coordination for child protection across the district.

Because every child deserves to grow up in a safe and nurturing environment, we are building communities that care, protect, and act for children’s welfare.

Our Family Strengthening Programme has inaugurated the Community Child Protection Committee (CCPC) and Child Rights and Responsibility Clubs (CRRCs) at Adasawase in the Eastern Region. The event, which began with a spirited float through the community, brought together children, teachers, and local leaders to promote child safety and participation.

Dignitaries, including Hon. Ernest Owusu Ntim (DCE), Mr. Shakil Mahamood Kpedau (District Coordinating Director), and Mad. Pearl Leonel Acquah (District Director of Education) reaffirmed the Assembly’s commitment to institutionalizing child protection.

Through drama, poetry, and choreography, children powerfully addressed issues of teenage pregnancy, sexual harassment, and civic responsibility. SOS Children’s Villages in Ghana also supported schools and families with literacy lamps, WASH supplies, classroom furniture, adolescent-friendly materials, sewing machines, and start-up toolkits, strengthening community resilience and youth empowerment.

Together, we are building child-safe communities where every child is visible, valued, and protected.

Rotary Club of Kumasi–Premier International Strengthens Child Well-Being at SOS Children’s Village, Kumasi

As part of its commitment to advancing child welfare and supporting community-based care systems, the Rotary Club of Kumasi Premier International has donated 52 mattresses, 104 pillows, and 104 bedsheets to SOS Children’s Village in Kumasi. The donation, part of the Club’s end-of-year service project, directly contributes to improving the comfort, health, and holistic development of children growing up in alternative care.

Speaking at the presentation ceremony, the President of the Rotary Club, Mr. Avinash Lakhani, underscored the link between children’s basic needs and their overall development. “If they have a good night’s sleep, their academic performance gets better,” he noted, highlighting the role of adequate rest in cognitive growth, emotional well-being, and learning outcomes.

Past Assistant Governor Babah-Alargi commended SOS Children’s Villages in Ghana for its sustained dedication to child protection and family strengthening, assuring the organization of continued collaboration to implement initiatives that advance children’s rights and welfare. He further encouraged the Village to safeguard the items to ensure long-term benefit for the children.

Receiving the items on behalf of SOS Children’s Villages in Ghana, Mr. Bernard Amoako, Programme Director of the Kumasi Location, presented a certificate of appreciation signed by the National Director to the Rotary Club, in recognition of its generosity and steadfast commitment to improving the quality of care for children.

A poignant moment of the event was when the children presented a handcrafted 'Thank You' card to the Rotary team, a powerful symbol of the value they place on kindness and the impact of community support on their lives.

The event was attended by members of other Rotary Clubs and Rotaract representatives, demonstrating a shared belief that protecting children’s rights and ensuring their well-being is a collective responsibility.

SOS Children’s Villages in Ghana extends its profound gratitude to the Rotary Club of Kumasi–Premier International for this meaningful contribution. Partnerships like these play a critical role in creating safe, nurturing environments where every child can thrive, learn, and reach their full potential.

A Legacy of Love, a Future of Hope!

Behind every transformed life at SOS Children’s Villages in Ghana stands a story of generosity and belief in the potential of every child. Today, we honour one such story; that of Mrs. Elizabeth Adjei, whose unwavering support continues to change lives and shape futures.

For many years, Mrs. Adjei has been more than a donor. Through her consistent contributions of cash, essential supplies, and heartfelt care, she has become an integral part of the fabric of our mission, ensuring that children in our Tema programme location grow up in a nurturing environment filled with love, security, and opportunity.

To express our gratitude, the Tema leadership team and some of the children whose lives she has touched visited her home to offer prayers of blessing and strength. During this visit, we presented a citation of appreciation in recognition of her remarkable commitment. In her response, she encouraged us to stay steadfast in our mission and reminded us that the reward for giving lies not in accolades but in the difference made in the lives of others.

As Mrs. Elizabeth Ocloo, our Programme Director, beautifully put it:
“A seed planted years ago blossoms today not just as a structure, but as the unfolding potential in every child's story. To our long-term donor, your generosity isn’t a single chapter; it is the binding thread of our entire story.”

Mrs. Adjei’s example is a powerful reminder that sustainable change is built on consistent acts of kindness. Every contribution, no matter the size, helps us provide stable homes, quality education, healthcare, and emotional support to children who might otherwise be forgotten.

You too can be part of this story. Your donation is not just a gift; it is a lifeline. It is hope renewed, potential unlocked, and futures rewritten. Together, we can ensure that every child in Ghana grows up in a loving family and has the chance to thrive.

Join us. Give today. Make tomorrow brighter.

Our Story

SOS Children’s Villages-Ghana is the local branch of an international humanitarian organisation, SOS Children’s Villages International which provides abandoned and destitute children with safe, stable homes and loving families. Children live in family houses in our 4 Children’s Villages located in Tema, Asiakwa, Kumasi, and Tamale with their SOS mothers and siblings until they reach independence and exit care well equipped with good education, motivation, and the strength of a stable and supportive family.

We also reach out to vulnerable children and families in the community through our Community Intervention Programmes to prevent children from losing parental care. In Ghana, the first SOS Children’s Village was established in 1974 at Tema to cater for the needs of abandoned Ghanaian children. For over 45 years, we have cared and supported children to become self-reliant and adults who contribute to the development of society.
