FROM PREPAREDNESS TO DIGNITY: CARITAS GHANA DEEPENS FLOOD RESPONSE PREPARATIONS
When floods strike, effective humanitarian response begins long before assistance reaches affected households. It begins with listening, understanding local realities, building trust and ensuring that affected people have a voice in the response.
Caritas Ghana is advancing preparations for a Multipurpose Cash Assistance (MPCA) intervention in three flood-affected areas of Greater Accra: Ga East, Ada East and Ningo-Prampram.
The field engagement combined two important and complementary stages: community entry and stakeholder engagement, followed by community sensitization and engagement with residents and affected households.
Entering the Communities Through Partnership
The process began with engagements with key stakeholders, including Municipal/District Chief Executives (MDCEs), NADMO Directors, community leaders and Parish Priests serving the affected communities.
These engagements helped Caritas Ghana understood the local context, identified priority areas, strengthen coordination and ensure that the planned intervention complements existing government and humanitarian efforts.
Putting Affected People at the Centre
The next step was community sensitization: meeting directly with residents, affected households and potential beneficiaries.
These engagements provided an opportunity to explain the purpose and scope of the planned MPCA intervention, clarify eligibility and selection processes, manage expectations and provide information on accountability and feedback mechanisms.
Most importantly, they created space for affected people to ask questions, express concerns, share their experiences and express their priority needs.
This approach is grounded in the humanitarian principles of impartiality, needs-based assistance, accountability to affected populations and Do No Harm.
Across Ga East, Ada East and Ningo-Prampram, Caritas Ghana recognises that communities experience flooding differently. The response will therefore remain context-sensitive, inclusive and people-centred.
The journey from preparedness to assistance is underway.
For Caritas Ghana, preparedness is not merely about getting ready to respond. It is about getting ready to respond well with compassion, dignity and affected people at the centre.
Caritas Ghana: Serving with Compassion. Responding with Dignity. Building Resilience.
