We are deeply saddened by the passing of Koyo Kouoh. An unapologetic visionary and fearless force in the art world. Her appointment as curator of the 2026 Venice Biennale, only the second African-born curator in its history, was a moment of immense pride. Her loss is a profound shock to us at the Beyond Collective. Our heartfelt condolences go out to her family and all who were inspired by her brilliance.

Ghanaian contemporary artist Bernard Akoi-Jackson stages an art performance to draw attention to the destruction of water bodies in Ghana caused by illegal gold mining activities, Galamsey.
The character he embodies is indeterminate, and yet strikingly present. Who is he? An ancient emissary spirit, a figure of royal significance, or a guardian of collective hope? Is the bell ringing perhaps a call to unite for collective action?

Ghanaian artists are raising their voices against the attack on our water bodies caused by illegal mining, commonly known as Galamsey. With numerous protests and citizen arrests across Ghana’s capital, these artists, in collaboration with street hawkers, imagine a bleak future where access to clean, potable water becomes a luxury reserved for the wealthy.

Stop Galamsey now. Protect our water bodies.

A film by a network of Ghanaian artists advocating for water security.
