National Communications Authority reports that MTN Ghana holds 81.29% of the country's mobile-data subscriptions.
MTN Ghana CEO Stephen Blewett has also stated that TikTok is the biggest consumer of data bundles on MTN Ghana's network.
The question we must ask is simple:
As social media becomes increasingly powerful across Africa, are we protecting our children fast enough?
This is not about banning technology.
It is about recognizing that children can be exposed to sexual content, violence, cyberbullying, grooming, exploitation, harmful challenges and other material they may not yet be emotionally or developmentally prepared to navigate.
What we are seeing in Ghana is a warning for Africa.
This is why Child Online Africa is calling for stronger continental action including a social-media delay for children, a minimum age of 16 for social-media access, effective age assurance, safety-by-design and stronger African child online safety systems.
Let's not wait until more children are harmed before we act.
