World Elephant Day! 🐘

The African forest elephant is Critically Endangered, while the African savanna elephant is Endangered (IUCN Red List). Ghana is home to both savanna elephants in Mole National Park up north, and smaller, more elusive forest elephants holding on in Kakum, Ankasa, Bia and other southern reserves. But viable populations now survive in only a handful of protected areas, and without secure habitat, local populations can vanish long before a species disappears globally.

Poaching and the illegal wildlife trade remain among the biggest threats they face, alongside habitat loss. Every tusk sold funds the next kill.

This World Elephant Day, let us protect elephants, protect their habitats, and reject illegal wildlife products.

Field Update: ERF Project 🌱

As the Ecological Restoration Fund (ERF) project draws its curtains, these are the final activities to allow the communities to take over the restoration and management of the restored sites.

At Kananto-Kabampe CREMA, a beating up and expansion exercise was carried out across Kabampe and Kananto, planting 1,300 new seedlings and bringing the total used for beating up to 4,020. A further 80 Mahogany seedlings went to a farmer at Larabanga for agroforestry.

With the sites restored, the responsibility now shifts to the community to protect and sustain what has been planted.

A year ago, a conversation about creating space for nature began. A few weeks, that vision has become a reality.

The Ghana Wildlife Society is proud to have partnered with Mövenpick Ambassador Hotel (Mövenpick Ambassador Accra) to establish and officially commission a Bird Sanctuary within the hotel grounds; a significant step towards promoting urban biodiversity conservation in Ghana.

This sanctuary is more than just a green space. It provides a safe habitat for birds while demonstrating how the hospitality industry can integrate biodiversity conservation into corporate sustainability initiatives. It also serves as a living platform for environmental education, inspiring guests, visitors, and the wider public to appreciate and protect nature.

Commissioning marks an important milestone in the power of partnerships, proving that when conservation organizations and the private sector work together, meaningful and lasting impact is possible.

Here's to creating more spaces where people and nature can thrive together.

26 July was the International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem.

Along Ghana's coast, mangroves hold back the sea, shelter fish and birds, clean our water and store carbon. Yet we have lost more than a fifth of them in twenty years, and much of our coastline now faces erosion and flooding.

The good news is that restoration is under way in the Volta Region and around the Keta Lagoon. Protecting mangroves protects both people and wildlife.

That number is not just a global statistic. It is happening here too. Our forests are being cleared, our wetlands converted into residential estates and our rivers polluted. This is pushing many species to the brink, closer to disappearing forever.

Biodiversity is not a luxury. It is what feeds us, cleans our water and keeps our climate stable. When we protect habitats, we protect ourselves.

🌳 Plant native trees, not just any tree
📢 Report illegal logging and poaching when you see it
♻️ Cut down on plastic, it is choking our wetlands and coastlines

| Fondation Franklinia
As we close out Phase 2 of our Fondation Franklinia project, we're consolidating six years of restoration gains in the Somanya forest district.

This season, roughly 9,000 seedlings were planted across six sites, including Yongwa, Sapawsu, Volta Block 1, and Aboben. Focus species included our three targets, Talbotiella gentii, Hunteria ghanensis, and Drypetes singroboensis, alongside natives like Terminalia superba, Khaya senegalensis, and Ceiba pentandra.

The team also tended to earlier plantings, replacing lost seedlings and monitoring survival rates.
Six years on, this reflects our long-term commitment to restoring Ghana's native forests.

The recent floods in Accra left homes underwater, roads impassable and lives lost. Choked drains made it worse. Every plastic bottle and sachet dumped in a gutter is one more blockage waiting for the next downpour.

This July, choose reusables over single-use plastic. Bin your waste properly. Talk to your neighbours about it too.

Our rivers, lagoons and wetlands, and the birds and wildlife that depend on them, cannot keep absorbing what we throw away.
