IDEG in partnership with Oxfam organised a policy dialogue under the theme “Towards Effective Constitutional Amendment: The Necessity of Legal and Institutional Safeguards” to explore ways of advancing Ghana's constitutional amendment process and promoting inclusive governance.

Notable speakers included Prof. Kofi Quashigah (Constitutional and Legal Law Expert), Ms. Becky Enyonam Ahadzi (Esq) (Coordinator of Affirmative Action Law Coalition), and Mr. Kwesi Jonah (Senior Research Fellow & Head of Advocacy and Institutional Relations IDEG), who contributed diverse perspectives on the legal and institutional gaps within the current framework. Other speakers included Dr Emmanuel Akwetey, Executive Director of IDEG and Mohammed Mahamud, a representative of Oxfam.

Discussions highlighted the urgent need for the creation of a Multiparty Democracy and Constitutional Reform Commission (MDCRC) to ensure continuity and protect the reform process from political interference and enforceable measures like electoral quotas to boost women’s political representation. The experts also warned against wholesale constitutional changes, calling instead for a gradual and structured approach.

The dialogue further described the constitutional review as a key opportunity for the youth to shape Ghana’s democratic future and drive long-term nation-building.
