Meet the newest peer mentors at St. John's Integrated SHS!
Over two days, the Ghana National Association of the Deaf (GNAD) trained 20 deaf and hearing students to lead the fight against bullying in their own school.
These young mentors are now ready to:
Educate their peers about bullying and how to respond
Offer emotional and social support to students who need it
Promote safe reporting through GNAD's Silent Voice app
Bridge deaf and hearing students through understanding and respect
They also took a pledge, a promise to support one another and build a safer, more inclusive school for everyone.
When students look out for students, whole communities grow stronger.
Every hand has a voice.

A proud milestone for the Deaf community in West Africa.

The Ghana National Association of the Deaf (GNAD) has wrapped up a landmark technical mission to the National Federation of the Deaf of CΓ΄te d'Ivoire (FENASOCI), under the programme "The Right to Sign Language at All Stages of Life."

Working as a mentor to FENASOCI and the Association des Sourds du Togo (AST), our team helped move Ivorian Sign Language (LSCI) from scattered regional variations toward one unified, classroom-ready language.
Some of what the mission achieved:

Reshaped the foundational curriculum for real conversational fluency
Trained instructors in the 3P methodology: Presentation, Practice, Production
Reached 81 participants, most of them from the Deaf community
Built a plan to push for Deaf schools to be recognised under the Ministry of Education

When Deaf communities across borders share knowledge, everyone moves forward together.
Every hand has a voice.

πŸ™Œ 24 Women. 2 Days. One Message That Went National.

On the 27th and 28th of April, at Sunlodge Hotel in Tesano, something powerful happened, and this time, Ghana heard it on national television.
The Ghana National Association of the Deaf (GNAD) and UNDP Ghana hosted a two-day Capacity Building Workshop for Women with Disabilities under the theme: "Empowered Women with Disabilities Crucial for Inclusive Leadership and Advocacy."
24 participants. 45 persons in attendance. Women with physical disabilities, blindness, deafness, albinism, stammering, burns, DeafBlindness, and more, alongside mothers, caregivers, facilitators, sign language interpreters, and media from GBC/GTV, TV3, and Disability News Ghana.
And the story? It aired on GBC's afternoon news and the 7:00 PM Evening News. The whole country heard it. πŸ“Ί

Here is what the data shows:
πŸ“Œ Only 44% had heard of Ghana's new Persons with Disabilities Bill 2026 before the workshop. After 100% understood it and being ready to advocate for it.
πŸ“Œ Confidence in speaking to government officials jumped from 75% to 95%.
πŸ“Œ Leadership confidence? 100%. Every single post-assessment respondent.
πŸ“Œ Facilitators rated 4.8 out of 5. Every evaluation respondent said they'd come back for more.
The participant refused to sit down in the role play until she had a real commitment from the "government official."

But beyond the numbers, it's the moments that stay with you.
The woman who finally understood that accessibility is a right, not a request.
The participant who refused to sit down in the role play until she had a real commitment from the "government official."
The quiet voices that found their power one session at a time.
Three sign language interpreters were present throughout, making sure no one was left out of a single conversation.

The Persons with Disabilities Bill 2026 is before Cabinet. These women will not let it be forgotten.
To every participant, facilitator, interpreter, and partner, well done. πŸ’™πŸ’›

20 Leaders. 16 Regions. One Mission: A Stronger GNAD.

GNAD just brought together Deaf leaders from every region in Ghana for a powerful workshop on governance, advocacy, and leadership right here at the GNAD Conference Hall.
The goal? To move from just doing activities to solving problems strategically. 🎯

Here's what happened:
βœ… Leaders trained on their rights, roles, and responsibilities
βœ… Regional challenges discussed openly through zonal assignments
βœ… Every leader tasked with creating a mentorship plan for their home branch
βœ… District advocacy plans aligned with national goals
βœ… 30-day follow-up timeline set to track progress
Our leaders aren't just attending workshops, they're going back as master trainers ready to strengthen GNAD from the grassroots up. πŸ™Œ
This is what building a stronger Association looks like. Together.

Free Education for Deaf Students: But Can They Access It?

Ghana's Free Tertiary Education Policy covers tuition and accommodation for students with disabilities. That's great progress. But here's the problem: it does not include Sign Language Interpreters.
GNAD recently visited three universities and colleges, TTU, the University of Ghana, and Presbyterian College of Education, to see how the policy is working for Deaf students.

What we found:
βœ… Institutions are committed and doing their best
❌ But there aren't enough interpreters
❌ Government won't give clearance to recruit more
❌ The interpreters who are there are overworked and underpaid
Over 119 Deaf students are enrolled across these three institutions alone. They showed up. They enrolled. They are doing the work. Now the system needs to meet them halfway.
GNAD is advocating for Sign Language Interpreting to be explicitly included in the policy because free education must mean accessible education. πŸ’™

Our Deaf Women Leaders Now Know Their Rights And They're Ready to Fight for Them.

GNAD recently brought together 20 Deaf women leaders from the Central, Ashanti, and Northern Regions for a powerful training on the African Disability Protocol (ADP) a groundbreaking legal framework by the African Union that protects the rights of persons with disabilities across Africa.
Our women learned about the articles that directly affect their lives the right to sign language access, education, healthcare, employment, and protection from violence and abuse.
They also watched a global conversation by Sightsavers and the Africa Disability Alliance on how regional bodies can push for the Protocol's adoption across the continent.

The takeaway? These rights exist on paper. Now it's time to make them real in our communities, our workplaces, and our government institutions. πŸ’™
Inclusion is not a moment. It's a movement. And our Deaf women are leading the way.

GNAD Women's Wing Leaders Are Building Our Financial Future!
Big things are happening at GNAD!
Twenty of our Women's Wing leaders came together at the Accra Rehabilitation Centre for a powerful summit on resource mobilisation and leadership. The message was clear: it's time to fund our mission from within.
Here's what our leaders walked away with:
βœ… A standardised system for financial reporting across all regions
βœ… Training on using Mobile Money (MoMo) for transparent dues collection
βœ… Skills to train others through the Training of Trainers (TOT) model
βœ… Ambitious but achievable regional fundraising targets
Mr Emmanuel Sackey of the National Training Team challenged participants to see membership dues not as a burden, but as an investment in the community, funding awareness campaigns, capacity building, welfare, and decision-making at every level.
Our Deaf women leaders are not waiting for change. They are making it happen. πŸ’™
