PAWA'S BOOK OF THE WEEK ( Week 2, Sixth Edition)

A GENERAL THEORY OF OBLIVION by José Eduardo Agualusa from Angola has received positive reviews for its storytelling and the depth of its themes.

Based on a true story, Angolan author Agualusa’s beautifully sprawling and poetic novel, translated by Daniel Hahn, about a Portuguese woman who walls herself into her apartment in Angola just before independence in 1975 was the winner of the International Dublin Literary award.

Snippets of diary entries – sometimes meditative, at other times paranoid and unhinged – interrupt an economical third-person narrative that follows Ludovica’s day-to-day survivalist life, during which she lures pigeons into traps using diamonds, grows vegetables on her terrace and makes bonfires in her kitchen.

Through the windows and walls, she glimpses and hears life in the changing city outside (“a distant planet”); through her squinting eyes, we observe the country’s formative years.

The book extends far beyond its political setting, however. When Agualusa describes a trauma in Ludovica’s past, he suggests parallels between her agoraphobia and Angola’s colonisation by Portugal.

In Angola’s independence and the end of the civil war, we see hope of freedom for Ludovica, from traumatic memories and her fear of people.

PAWA'S BOOK OF THE WEEK ( Week 1, Sixth Edition)

2084: THE END OF THE WORLD by Boualem Sansal from Algeria is a sharply satirical novel about an oppressive religious dictatorship and one man’s discovery of an underground resistance.

The book which is a tribute to George Orwell’s dystopian classic 1984 and a cry of protest against totalitarianism of all kinds, Boualem Sansal’s 2084 tells the story of a near future in which religious extremists have established a caliphate that forbids autonomous thought.

In the year 2084, in the kingdom of Abistan―named after the prophet Abi, earthly messenger of the god Yölah―citizens submit to a single god, demonstrating their devotion by kneeling in prayer nine times a day.

Remembering the past is forbidden, and an omnipresent surveillance system instantly informs the authorities of every deviant act, thought, or idea.

The kingdom is blessed and its citizens are happy, filled with purpose and piety.

Those who are not―the heretics―are put to death by stoning or beheading in city squares. But Ati has met people who think differently: In ghettos and caves, hidden from the authorities, exist the last living heretics and free-thinkers of Abistan.

Under their influence, Ati begins to doubt. He begins to think. Now, he will have to defend his thoughts with his life.

The book has been described as “a rare, powerful book, at the intersection of fable and lampoon, of satire and science fiction,” a cry of freedom, a gripping novel of ideas, and an indictment of the kind of closed-minded fundamentalism that threatens our democracies and the ideals on which they are founded.

Alison Anderson’s deft and intelligent translation conveys Sansal’s abhorrence of a system that controls people’s minds, while explaining that the religion was not originally evil but has been corrupted.

A moving and cautionary story, 2084 is a powerful novel that celebrates resistance.

Detailing the events in Cameroon and the struggles of its people trapped in decades of tyranny, Emma interweaves the history of a war-torn country with threads of a personal conflict.

In this firsthand account of what a mother learns from her daughter as she faces her new and changed life, UNRAVELED reveals how to turn heartbreak into inspiration and thrive in the midst of conflict.

The Pan African Writers Association ( PAWA) has been invited by one of Africa's most formidable Pan African organizations, INSPIRE AFRICA CONNECT to attend the forthcoming 2026 FESTAC AFRICA festival in Dakar, Senegal.

Since it's rebirth in 2022, the festival has traveled to Tanzania, Kenya and Ghana.

The theme of the Senegal event which has been slated for October 2026 is: " Uniting Africa Through Culture, Creativity And Collaboration For Sustainable Growth.

According to the organizers, the theme embodies the festival's commitment to fostering unity across the African continent and it's diaspora.

It is hoped that the festival will demonstrate how the three pillars of cultural innovation, sustainable growth and strategic collaboration work together to create opportunities, drive economic development and celebrate the richness of African identity.
