Today, the 11th of October, 2026, the world marks International Day of the Girl Child. The United Nations General Assembly established the day in 2011 to recognise girls' rights and the unique challenges girls face around the world.

The theme for 2026, set by the UN, is "End child marriage and invest in girls' rights!" According to UNICEF's 2026 estimates, about one in five girls worldwide is married before the age of 18. That is roughly 650 million women and girls alive today.

At Charlotte's Memorial Foundation, we believe every girl deserves a childhood, an education and the freedom to choose her own future. As the UN and UNICEF urge, we call on communities to challenge the harmful norms that drive child marriage, and on leaders to support laws, policies and investments that protect girls' rights. This year, we stand with girls everywhere, and we invite you to do the same.

In China, children are taught to clean, cook, sea, repair items, grow crops and vegetables and experience life at a very early stage. It is not child labour. It is equipping children with the basics in life to enable there enjoy an independent life.
