Why the new Community Service Law is important:
The passage of the Community Service Bill into law is a significant achievement for justice reform in Ghana. It provides an alternative to imprisonment for certain minor offences, and will decongest overcrowded prisons, reduce the cost of incarceration, and give courts more sentencing options. The law also promotes rehabilitation and reintegration, and therefore, allows eligible offenders to contribute positively to their communities while maintaining family and social ties. It is an important step towards a fairer, more humane and effective justice system. The next priority must be effective implementation and public education.
