We turned lessons about money into a fun, hands-on experience and the children at the Universal Wonderful Street Academy in Jamestown, learned a lot!

The children wrote down their goals and the things they wished to buy, then through interactive play, they learned how to manage money, identify needs versus wants, and decide whether it was the right time to make a purchase.

At the end, they discovered important money lessons such as:
โ€ข Diligently saving towards a goal
โ€ข Having money in hand doesnโ€™t mean they can buy whatever they want
โ€ข My decision today affects what I will have tomorrow
โ€ข Do I really "need" what I "want"?
โ€ข It is not always bad to delay certain purchases

The adoption of the NACCUGSoft core banking solution by selected credit unions in Sierra Leone has enabled a transition from manual operations to a digital system. This shift has brought to the forefront critical questions around cybersecurity and data protection, underscoring the need for strong safeguards to ensure the safety, integrity, and trustworthiness of financial systems.

With support from German Sparkassenstiftung Western Africa and the National Association of Cooperative Credit Unions of The Gambia, the National Cooperative Credit Union Association- Sierra Leone -naccua organized a comprehensive two-day training program for selected credit union leaders, facilitated by Bernard Sackey, DSIK Global IT Officer and Data Protection Supervisor.

The training focused on practical and foundational areas, including cybersecurity hygiene, secure data handling practices, and data protection principles. Particular emphasis was placed on preparing participants for emerging regulatory requirements, as Sierra Leone currently considers the Data Protection and Right to Access Information Bill, 2025 before Parliament.

This proactive approach ensures that credit union leaders are well-equipped to align with anticipated legal and compliance obligations once the bill is enacted.

To mark this occasion, German Sparkassenstiftung Western Africa hosted partners from Ghana (Ghana Cooperative Credit Unions Association), The Gambia (National Association of Cooperative Credit Unions of The Gambia), Sierra Leone (National Cooperative Credit Union Association- Sierra Leone -naccua), Senegal (Ministรจre de la Microfinance, de lโ€™Economie sociale et solidaire - Sรฉnรฉgal, Direction de la Microfinance et l'Inclusion financiรจre, APIM-Sรฉnรฉgal), and Germany (Sparkasse Attendorn-Lennestadt-Kirchhundem, RSGV) to a project closing conference on 13th April 2026 in Ghana.

Held under the theme โ€œReflections and Sustainability in Results,โ€ participants discussed the projectโ€™s achievements, challenges and sustainability measures in the quest to improve financial inclusion of excluded or disadvantaged groups thereby facilitating their participation in economic life and contributing to poverty reduction.

Funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the Regional Project has contributed to strengthening the credit union and microfinance sector by enhancing institutional capacity, improving governance structures, fostering regional cooperation through Southโ€“South exchanges and technical knowledge sharing.

A delegation from our project partner in The Gambia is currently on a study visit to the ROAA Co-Operative Credit Union Ltd. (ROAACCU), the ARCCU Co-operative Credit Union Limited (ARCCU) and the Bopp Co-operative Credit Union in Takoradi, Ghana to gain insights into the MSME cash-flow-based lending concept.

The group, composed of representatives of the National Association of Cooperative Credit Unions of The Gambia and the Gambia Teachers' Union Cooperative Credit Union, is studying the experiences, lessons learned, and challenges associated with this approach in preparation for potential implementation in The Gambia.

This exchange was organized in collaboration with the Ghana Cooperative Credit Unions Association through the Western Bloc, an output under the Regional Project in West Africa funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), and implemented by DSIK in partnership with Credit Unions Associations in Ghana, The Gambia, Sierra Leone, and the Microfinance Directorate in Senegal.

The Kumasi City Incubation Hub - KCIH, one of the selected local training providers, has just concluded a baking training session at the KCIH Center in Boadi, Kumasi.

Participants were taken through key industry production standards, including:
โ€ข Hygiene, sanitation, and safety in food production
โ€ข Precision in measuring ingredients and following instructions
โ€ข Professional discipline during food preparation

They successfully completed their first practical session, where they baked cookies, rock buns and scones.
