The National Tenants Union of Ghana has pushed back against rising rent costs, describing the trend as unjustified and burdensome on tenants across the country.

Speaking on Agenda on TV3 Ghana, the Union’s Director of Communications and Corporate Affairs, Reindolph Afrifa-Oware, emphasized that housing should be treated as a long-term investment rather than a short-term profit venture.

He noted that it is unreasonable for landlords to expect to recover loans within a short period, stressing that such expectations often lead to the imposition of excessive rents on tenants. According to him, this practice continues to worsen the housing situation and deepen financial strain on ordinary Ghanaians.

The Union is therefore calling for stronger regulation and enforcement within the rental market to ensure fairness, protect tenants, and promote a more sustainable housing system nationwide.

The National Tenants Union of Ghana has renewed its call for urgent government intervention to address the country’s growing housing crisis, emphasizing the need for affordable housing solutions.

Speaking on Agenda on TV3 Ghana, the Union’s Director of Communications and Corporate Affairs, Reindolph Afrifa-Oware, highlighted the increasing burden of rent on ordinary Ghanaians. He stressed that government must take a leading role in providing affordable housing to bridge the widening housing deficit.

According to him, several countries have successfully implemented policies that support affordable housing, and Ghana must adopt similar measures to protect tenants and ensure decent living conditions for all.

The Union maintains that without decisive action, the rent crisis will continue to deepen, disproportionately affecting low- and middle-income earners across the country.

Our Director of Communications and Corporate Affairs, Reindolph Afrifa-Oware granted an interview on Starr FM 103.5 to discuss the President’s directive on rent advance payments.

The Union welcomes the reaffirmation of the six-month rent advance limit under the Rent Act 1963 (Act 220) as a step in the right direction.

However, we emphasize that effective enforcement, tenant protection, and accessible reporting systems are critical to ensuring this directive delivers real relief to tenants across the country.

We also highlighted the need for a balanced approach that protects both tenants and landlords while addressing the broader structural challenges within Ghana’s housing sector.

The National Tenants Union of Ghana remains committed to working with government and all stakeholders to promote a fair, transparent, and sustainable rental system.

“The President has said the right thing. Now the country must do the right thing.

Tenants need protection, landlords need stability, and Ghana needs a housing system that works for everyone.

At the National Tenants Union of Ghana, we are ready to partner government and all stakeholders to make this a reality—not just a statement.

We are encouraged—but not complacent.”

“Housing should not be a source of suffering for citizens. It should be a foundation for dignity, productivity, and family stability.

The solution is not to pit landlords against tenants. The real task is to build a housing system that works for everyone—a system where landlords receive fair returns on their investment and tenants can live decently without financial distress.

That is the vision the National Tenants Union of Ghana continues to advocate for.”

The National Tenants Union of Ghana wholeheartedly supports the recent press statement issued by the Office of the Rent Commissioner on the mandatory issuance and proper use of Rent Cards under the Rent Act, 1963 and PNDCL 138.

This directive is timely, lawful, and necessary. It reinforces transparency in rent payments, strengthens dispute resolution processes, and most importantly, protects tenants from exploitation and false claims of arrears.

A Rent Card is more than a formality — it is a legal record of tenancy and proof of payment. Proper documentation benefits both tenants and responsible landlords by reducing conflicts and promoting accountability.

We therefore call on all tenants across Ghana to take this directive seriously:
• Demand your Rent Card at the commencement of your tenancy.
• Ensure every rent payment is recorded accurately.
• Do not accept undocumented rental arrangements.

The law is clear, and compliance is mandatory.

The Union stands ready to support public education and will continue to advocate for full enforcement to ensure fairness and dignity within Ghana’s rental sector.

Signed,
Reindolph Afrifa-Oware
