“Trade alone will not transform the country. You must embrace the development of productive capabilities. As long as you are not producing, we can trade, and trade can grow up to 80%, but if we end up selling Chinese or Indonesian goods, it doesn't benefit us. Therefore, integrating the productive system is very, very important. Additionally, once we achieve that unity, we diminish vulnerability—the exposure to exchange fluctuations.”

— Horman Chitonge, professor at the University of Cape Town, on the topic “Regional Value Chains and Regional Integration in Africa: A Bottom-Up Approach.”

"The African Grain Management Facility should purchase grain from within Africa, focusing initially on crops produced and consumed in Africa but not vital to large global markets—including sorghum, cassava, and millets such as pearl millet, finger millet, and fonio.

The facility should also buy from the international market those food items produced domestically but also imported, such as rice, wheat, and maize – all of which have shown considerable global price volatility recently.”

— Jayati Ghosh, professor at UMass Amherst, on the topic “Regional Strategies for Food and Financial Sovereignty.”
