World Breastfeeding Week 2026
Theme: Breastfeeding for sustainable start in life: strengthen what works
The 2026 theme for the World Breastfeeding Week is "Breastfeeding for a sustainable start in life: strengthen what works," focuses on tracking progress, evaluating impact, and scaling proven approaches that improve breastfeeding outcomes. It calls on governments, health systems, workplaces, communities, civil society organizations, and families to build on successful experiences and strengthen the "Warm Chain of Support" for breastfeeding.

Breastfeeding is the best source of nutrition for the baby. It helps build the baby's immune system, thereby protecting baby against infections , and it plays a key role in building the bond between mother and child.
HEALTH BENEFITS OF BREASTFEEDING FOR THE BABY
-Breast milk has maternal antibodies and confers passive immunity to the baby.
- It Protects against infections.
- It Supplies all the necessary nutrients in the proper proportions.
- It Protects against allergies, illnesses and childhood obesity.
- Breast milk is easily digestible. It gives no constipation, diarrhoea or stomach upset.
-Breast milk significantly improves the health, survival and wellbeing of the baby.
BENEFITS OF BREASTFEEDING TO THE MOTHER:
- Promotes bonding between mother and baby.
-Stimulates the uterus to contract and return to it's normal size.
- Reduces the risk of Postpartum haemorrhage.
- Reduces risk of Endometrial, Ovarian and Breast Cancer.
- Enhances birth spacing.
Initiate breastfeeding within an hour after delivery.
Breastfeed exclusively for 6 months.
Continue to breastfeed baby to at least 2 years.
