I present to you Ghana's first female cardiothoracic surgeon. Yup, just like Prof. Frimpong Boateng. Heart surgeon!!!!! Her name is Dr. Penelope Baaba Tettey Adinku and she is a historic medical trailblazer!
‼️She officially cemented her place in medical history in May 2022. She achieved her groundbreaking title after performing a highly complex, successful open-heart surgery on a six-year-old girl who suffered from Tetralogy of Fallot, a congenital heart defect.
‼️She successfully completed her Fellowship training with the West African College of Surgeons and was adjudged the best candidate in Cardiothoracic Surgery at the 2022 Fellowship Examinations, becoming the first Ghanaian female cardiothoracic surgeon.
‼️She holds an MBChB medical degree from KNUST, a Ph.D. in Molecular and Cell Biology from the University of Ghana, and a certificate in Health Leadership from the University of Washington. She is also an old girl of Wesley Girls High School.
‼️Becoming a heart surgeon was not her original childhood plan. As a young girl, “she was more interested in books and once dreamed of becoming an author of children's books.” And you know what? She can still write those books. Dr. Baaba! Ni f3!!!!
‼️ Medicine became an option through her family. Her father, Mr Ambrose Tettey, is a pharmacist and her mother is a teacher. Her immediate older sister entered medical school before her, and watching her journey, together with the encouragement of her parents, eventually influenced Dr Adinku to pursue medicine.
‼️Her achievements have earned her the IAP Young Physician Leader Award, the Young Star Award and the Valerie Rusch Mentored Career Development Award from the American Association for Thoracic Surgery.
‼️She is the wife of Rev. Ernest Adinku who is a captain in the Ghana Army.
