Every day, informal sector waste workers across Ghana sort, collect, and process waste that keeps our communities clean and materials in circulation.

Their work sustains Ghana’s waste economy, yet it has long gone unrecognized and under-protected.

On July 31, we’re launching the Federation of Informal Sector Waste Workers Associations of Ghana (FISWWAG), a union giving these workers a formal, recognized voice.

FISWWAG will push for safer working conditions, fair pay, and dignified livelihoods for the men and women who do this essential work.

Every day, informal sector waste workers across Ghana sort, collect, and process waste that keeps our communities clean and materials in circulation.

Their work sustains Ghana’s waste economy, yet it has long gone unrecognized and under-protected.

Markets play central role in contibuting to waste. Our zero waste campaign facilitated conversations with traders and market actors, creating space for them to openly share their experiences around waste challenges in busy market environments.
We guided discussions around practical solutions, including improving access to waste collection points, strengthening coordinated waste management among trader groups, reducing dependence on single-use plastics, and introducing composting of organics to reduce food waste.

As part of operationalizing our Cape Coast Zero Waste model,
we took our Zero-Waste Campaign across schools in Cape Coast. The campaign equiped student on the urgent needs to reduce waste and adopt zero waste actions. We also facilitated a school dialogue where students themselves sat on the panel and shared their thoughts on how zero waste can be made practical in their schools. Our role was to guide the conversation and bring structure to the ideas that came up. Practical steps like introducing waste separation in classrooms and around school compounds, encouraging the use of reusable bottles and food containers, strengthening environmental clubs to take active leadership, and promoting regular clean-up exercises were rolled out through these dialogues. Students pledged to commit to keeping their school environments clean and taking responsibility for waste management behaviors.

That moment in our Zero Waste Campaign when community members experienced Cape Coast’s waste management challenges and zero waste solutions through Virtual Reality (VR).

The experience was eye-opening as beneficiaries reflected on practical zero waste actions, with source separation emerging as one of the most important first steps toward reducing waste.

Through our Beyond Waste Initiative, supported by the UMI Fund, we are advancing zero waste narratives within communities and demonstrating how a regenerative economy can contribute to sustainable development.
