Cape Coast Doesn’t Have a Waste Problem, It Has a Circular Economy Opportunity

Cape Coast doesn’t just need cleaner streets, it needs a new understanding about waste.
Through the *Beyond Waste Initiative*, Green Growth Africa is gradually transforming waste into value, creating livelihoods and cleaner communities.

As we launch the *Zero Waste Campaign* , we call on passionate individuals to be part of this worthy cause.

This is more than volunteering. It is about:

* Driving real behaviour change in schools, markets, and communities
* Promoting circular solutions that reduce waste, encourage reuse, and turn materials into value
* Contributing to a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable Cape Coast

If you’re committed to environmental sustainability and ready to drive real change in communities, this is your opportunity.

At GGA, we believe the most powerful conservation tool is an empowered community.

We trained fishers and community members from Kedzi on responsible wetland stewardship, equipping them with the knowledge, skills, and tools to become frontline guardians of the Keta Lagoon Complex Ramsar Site.

From safe sea turtle handling and release techniques along the adjacent coastline to understanding how healthy wetlands support coastal ecosystems, fisheries, and community livelihoods, these champions are helping protect one of Ghana’s most important coastal landscapes.

Because when communities own conservation, nature thrives.

At a time when waste is no longer just an environmental issue but a public health, economic, and coastal resilience challenge, Green Growth Africa (GGA) is proud to partner with GAYO to convene the Sustainability Forum 2026.

This forum is more than a conversation, it is a platform to connect policy, innovation, and community-driven action toward a zero waste future in Cape Coast and beyond.

As we continue implementing our Zero Waste initiatives, we believe real solutions must come from collaboration between communities, government, private sector, and waste workers.

If you are shaping policy, building solutions, or driving change, this is a space you need to be part of.

We joined our friends at the Green Africa Youth Organization on 6th March, as Ghana marked its 69th Independence Day, for a Just Transition and Clean Air awareness walk in the Central Region alongside key stakeholders, waste workers and community members.

Beyond raising awareness on environmental protection and the need for clean air, we also highlighted the need for better conditions for waste workers, a just transition, and social justice within the waste management sector.

At Green Growth Africa, we are proud to stand with partners advocating for a cleaner environment while ensuring dignity, safety, and inclusion for the waste workers who keep our communities running.

Through our Waste Worker Summer School, we had expects from the Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly (CCMA), Community Water and Sanitation Agency(CWSA) and others train waste workers on safe collection, sorting, recovery, composting, and green enterprise development.

The training sessions were engaging, and filled with exchange of ideas, experiences, and practical strategies that highlighted the critical role waste workers play in environmental sustainability and public health.

The sessions strengthened capacity, enhanced practical skills and equipped them with knowledge needed to improve waste management practices within our communities

Why do climate injustice and poor waste management remain deeply intertwined challenges in the Global South, despite numerous global efforts?

The truth is simple: the Global South deserves solutions that reflect our realities , not imported models that overlook local contexts.

Our latest article explores why locally led zero waste systems are key to Africa’s sustainable future.

It was an emotional moment when Madam Dora Arthur received her very first certificate.

After working all her life in the waste sector, she shared that this was the first time her work had been formally recognised, through the Waste Worker Summer School under the Beyond Waste Initiative, with support from UMI Fund.

This is why our work matters. Zero waste is not only about managing waste; it is about respect, dignity, and valuing the people who keep our communities clean.

Join us at the graduation of our Beyond Waste Summer School cohort 1 as part of our Beyond Waste initiative, we’re taking a moment to recognize our waste workers who have been equipped with skills to do more than just manage waste.

Waste workers deserve knowledge, projection and opportunities! And that’s just what the BWI is providing!
