When a school closes, what closes with it?

Today, 9 September, is the International Day to Protect Education from Attack.

New data from GCPEA's Education Under Attack 2026 report: attacks on education reached record levels in 2024–2025 — over 8,566 incidents, up more than 40% from the previous two years.

But the impact isn't gender-neutral. Evidence shows that when schools shut down because of attacks, girls and women face greater risk — of violence, exploitation, and being pushed into early marriage or motherhood, especially as families struggle to cope.

Over 120 governments have endorsed the Safe Schools Declaration. GCPEA's Framework for Action shows what real implementation looks like.

As we mark today, positive relationships take the spotlight. Indeed, when partners prioritize each other’s sexual health – and understand that it is a shared responsibility – communication, trust and reproductive health outcomes improve.

One key to developing positive relationships is comprehensive sexuality education – the process of teaching the emotional, physical and social aspects of sexuality. This empowers everyone, especially women and girls, to form good relationships and protect their sexual and reproductive health and rights.
