Today, we celebrate the three remarkable teams from Faith Montessori School that participated in this year's Kofi A. Tawiah God Citizenship Challenge.

1. The Let's Heal Ghana Foundation identified the need to improve library facilities in Apraku M/A Basic School and Bortianor M/A Basic School and launched the โ€œBetter Books, Brighter Futureโ€ initiative. They learned that their libraries needed more books, better furniture, improved lighting and ventilation, and a more welcoming learning environment. Through school visits, needs assessments, stakeholder engagement, and fundraising efforts, the team continued to work towards refurbishing the libraries by providing books, furniture, improved lighting, and other learning resources despite the challenges they faced.

2. Project One for All, by a team of 5 high school students, also took action after learning about the poor condition of the washroom facilities at Gbawe Maternity Demonstration Clinic.
The team discovered that the deteriorated facilities posed serious hygiene and health concerns, particularly for expectant and nursing mothers. Through fundraising, personal contributions and community support, they embarked on a project aimed at renovating 2 of the facilities, 4 urinals and Hand-washing stands. With over GHC20,000 raised through various fundraising efforts, the team remain committed to ensuring that the projects are well completed to improve hygiene.

3. The third project, led by a team of six students, focused on supporting the Dental and Oral Maxillofacial Department of Korle Bu Teaching Hospital. Driven by a desire to make a difference in healthcare, and after considering several community project ideas, the students chose to address a need they believed could make a lasting impact. They engaged with the department to understand its most urgent equipment needs, conducted a needs assessment, developed a preliminary budget, and set a fundraising target of GHS 15,000 to support the purchase of essential dental instruments. Despite facing several challenges, the team from Firm Foundation remains resolute in their pursuit of this goal.

One remarkable aspect of these three initiatives is the determination of the students to persevere amidst the challenges that come with project delivery. The initiatives have also given the students an opportunity to practise compassion, teamwork, perseverance, responsibility and service.

What happens when young people decide that a cleaner community is everyoneโ€™s responsibility?
In Kpaguri, Wa, the staff and students of St. Francis Xavier Junior Seminary took action against the growing challenge of indiscriminate solid waste disposal. What started as a concern about rubbish-filled gutters, roadsides, and open spaces became a community-wide campaign to promote responsible waste management and healthier surroundings.
Through stakeholder engagement, community and school sensitisation, waste segregation demonstrations, and the โ€œKeep Kpaguri Cleanโ€ clean-up exercise, the team brought together students, residents, teachers, community leaders, and other stakeholders. The campaign reached several participants, more than 100 households, and a good number of students, while contributing to a reduction in visible illegal waste dump sites.
Beyond cleaning the environment, the project helped nurture leadership, responsibility, teamwork, volunteerism, compassion, respect, inclusiveness, perseverance, and civic-mindedness among the students. By using the local Waali language during sensitisation, the team also ensured that the message was accessible and meaningful to the community.
Most importantly, the project showed that lasting change happens when people do not simply wait for solutions but take responsibility for creating them. With monthly clean-up exercises, continued sensitisation, environmental monitoring, and school environmental clubs planned, the work in Kpaguri is set to continue.

The staff and students from St. Matildaโ€™s School, faced with plastic pollution, poor sanitation and a lack of trees in their community, worked on an initiative which focused on sanitation, tree planting and recycling.
Working with the Ga Central Municipal Assembly - Antie Aku, Parks and Gardens, and Integrated Recycling & Compost Plant Limited, the team organised community clean-ups, planted seedlings along the main road and collected plastic bottles for recycling.
Through this project, the team developed responsibility, teamwork, leadership, determination and respect, while learning that even small actions can create meaningful change when people work together. Their commitment continues beyond the challenge, with plans to maintain the planted trees, organise regular clean-ups, promote recycling and inspire younger students to become environmental ambassadors.

Turning waste into a useful resource can create a cleaner community. The "EcoSpark team" from Kukurantumi R/C JHS demonstrated this through their โ€œTransforming Cow Dung into Eco-Friendly Charcoalโ€ project as part of the Kofi A. Tawiah Good Citizenship Challenge.
By converting cow dung into charcoal briquettes (Charcoal blocks), the team explored an innovative way to reduce waste, improve community sanitation and reduce reliance on wood charcoal, which contributes to deforestation. Through research, community surveys and hands-on production, the students turned an environmental challenge into an opportunity for positive change.
Beyond the project itself, the experience strengthened teamwork, creativity, leadership, responsibility and problem-solving, while showing that young people can play an active role in protecting their communities and the environment.

What if the plastic polluting our communities could become part of the solution? The "Waste2Worth Team" of Okroase M/A Experimental Basic School took on this challenge by transforming plastic waste into useful pavement blocks.
After identifying plastic pollution as a major concern in the Okroase community, the students collected and sorted plastic waste, experimented with combining recycled plastics and sand, and developed pavement blocks from the materials. When they realised manual production could not meet the growing interest, they went a step further and developed a recycling machine to make production safer, faster, and more efficient.
The project has increased awareness about plastic recycling, encouraged responsible waste disposal, and inspired community members to see waste as a resource.
Through this project, the students demonstrated creativity, teamwork, perseverance, responsibility, leadership, and innovation.

Smarter farming starts with understanding the soil, and Koforidua Presby Basic E, Team Accuracy demonstrated this through their โ€œFertiCheckโ€ project as part of this yearโ€™s Kofi A. Tawiah Good Citizenship Challenge.
The students developed a soil fertility monitoring device designed to help farmers understand important soil conditions such as moisture, pH levels, and nutrient content.
Through the project, the students developed important character traits such as determination, creativity, responsibility, teamwork, and problem-solving. Their work shows how science and innovation can be used to address real challenges in agriculture and support more sustainable farming practices.

The staff and students of Jahrock Preparatory School took action to address flooding and overgrown areas in the Kaneshie Estates community. They desilted choked gutters around their school and cleared overgrown areas that could harbour rodents and reptiles.
With support from community stakeholders, the team worked together to remove sand, debris and weeds, helping improve the flow of rainwater and create a cleaner, safer environment.
Beyond the physical impact, the project strengthened teamwork, compassion, responsibility, diligence, leadership and volunteerism. It also taught the students that good citizenship means identifying problems in our communities and taking action to create positive change.
Congratulations to the students and teachers of Jahrock Preparatory School for demonstrating that young people can make a meaningful difference through service and teamwork!

The staff and students of Clarus Academy - Oyarifa took action to address poor drainage in their community behind Oyarifa Specialโ€“ICE through their project, โ€œMaintaining Good Community Drainage System.โ€
The team participated in activities aimed at improving drainage, reducing flooding, protecting homes and farmlands, promoting a cleaner environment, and encouraging community cooperation. Through this experience, they saw how proper drainage can contribute to public health, agriculture, safety, and the overall well-being of the community.
Beyond the physical work, the project helped the students develop important character traits, including service, leadership, compassion, discipline, determination, teamwork, and civic responsibility.
Well done to the students of Clarus Academy for this impactful project.

Sometimes, making a difference begins with something as simple as choosing to care. With compassion at the heart of their initiative, the students and staff of Yagbonwura Timu 1 Girls JHS reached out to inmates of the Salaga Prison to offer support, encouragement, and a reminder that they are not forgotten.
The team first visited the prison to understand the needs of the inmates and learn more about the importance of the rule of law. Determined to make a meaningful contribution, they mobilised support from teachers, school leaders, parents, and community stakeholders to fund their project.
The students prepared nutritious soya bean Tom Brown to supplement the inmates' diet and also produced liquid soap to support hygiene.
During their visit, they presented the items, shared words of encouragement, prayed with the inmates, and interacted with them within the guidelines of the prison authorities.
Beyond the donations, the experience gave the students an opportunity to put values such as compassion, respect, teamwork, responsibility, volunteerism, and determination into action.
Well done to the Timu 1 Girls JHS team for turning compassion into action and showing that even a small act of kindness can make a meaningful difference.
