For too long, the narrative of African enterprise has been one of untapped potential, a sleeping giant. But we know the truth. Across this continent, SMEs are not just the engines of our local economies; they are reservoirs of innovation, resilience, and world-class ingenuity.

The challenge has never been a lack of quality, but a lack of connection. Today, we aren’t just talking about exporting goods; we are talking about exporting a legacy. This is your moment to shift from local legend to global powerhouse, and to build the bridges that will carry the next generation of African prosperity to every corner of the world.

Join us on August 15th at 3 PM GMT to build that bridge together.

, Step Up AU Financial Support to First Category Status.

Ethiopia and Kenya have voluntarily agreed to increase their annual statutory contributions to the African Union (AU) to First Category Member State level, marking a major highlight of the 49th Ordinary Session of the AU Executive Council.

The decision, spanning the 2027–2029 assessment cycle under the Union's harmonized contribution system, stands out as a concrete demonstration of Pan-African solidarity and commitment to a financially autonomous African Union.

Closing the two-day ministerial session in Addis Ababa, Chairperson of the AU Executive Council and Burundi’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and Development Cooperation, Édouard Bizimana, expressed optimism that it will inspire other member states to strengthen collective efforts toward a financially self-reliant Union anchored on predictable and long-term financing.

He urged member states to implement all decisions adopted during the meeting with diligence, solidarity, and shared responsibility.

The Chairperson also stressed that deepening regional integration through closer cooperation among AU member states, Regional Economic Communities (RECs), and Union institutions remains vital to building a prosperous, resilient, and self-reliant continent.

The two-day session saw foreign ministers evaluate progress on Agenda 2063 implementation, institutional governance priorities, and strategic continental issues.

The decisions and recommendations adopted during the session will now be submitted to the Assembly of Heads of State and Government for consideration

Partnerships are the cornerstone of sustainable trade development, and ASSETS is proud to announce a major step forward in forging such alliances with the Government of Ghana.

During a high-level courtesy call on the Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry (MoTAI) earlier this month, ASSETS secured a firm commitment from the Ministry to collaborate on initiatives aimed at empowering Ghanaian startups and SMEs to access regional and international markets under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) as well as global markets through our programs, projects and trade missions.

Led by Team Lead, Mr. Peter Adetor, the ASSETS delegation presented a robust framework for partnership that goes beyond rhetoric, focusing on actionable interventions to address the critical gaps hindering SME export growth, including access to finance, regulatory compliance, and market intelligence.

Receiving the delegation on behalf of the Sector Minister, Hon. Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, Deputy Minister Hon. Sampson Ahi welcomed the ASSETS initiatives, reaffirming the Ministry's openness to strategic collaborations that drive industrialization and job creation through trade. Other key officials of the Ministry present included Mr. Alex Mensah the Director of Trade Facilitation, Mr. Kwame Oppong Ntim the Director of Agribusiness, Mr. Cyril King the Director of SMEs and Mr. Adam Seidu, Trade Facilitation.

For ASSETS, this engagement marks a pivotal moment in our pan-African mission and view this partnership as a launchpad for scaling its impact across the continent, starting with Ghana as a model for SME-driven export growth.

Did you know that one of Africa's key trade agreements goes beyond moving goods and also protects ideas?

The Protocol on Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) in the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) aims to build a single African market that supports innovation.

From a start-up’s new technology in Nairobi to a fashion brand in Dakar, a medical breakthrough in Cairo, or music from Lagos, the Protocol makes it easier to protect and commercialise intellectual property across Africa.

The Protocol focuses on several key areas:
1. Aligning IP rules across African countries to lower barriers for innovators and businesses
2. Encouraging national IP offices and regional organisations to work together for better protection and enforcement
3. Helping innovators, researchers, creatives, and entrepreneurs secure patents, trademarks, copyrights, industrial designs, and geographical indications
4. Promoting technology transfer, research, investment, and innovation to support sustainable industry and growth

For Africa's innovators, intellectual property is more than just a legal idea. It is an economic asset that turns ideas into businesses, creativity into jobs, and innovation into products and services that can compete across Africa and around the world.

A New Era for Investment in Ghana!
Great news for Ghana's business and investment landscape. The President has officially signed into law the new Ghana Investment Promotion Authority (GIPA) Act, repealing the former Ghana Investment Promotion Centre Act.

This legislation is set to reposition Ghana as a top investment destination in Africa and beyond, with streamlined processes that cut red tape and make it easier for investors to establish and operate businesses in Ghana.

The new Act guarantees enhanced investor protection by strengthening the legal framework to give both local and foreign investors greater confidence and security, while also improving institutional capacity by empowering the Authority with expanded mandates to promote, facilitate, and monitor investments more effectively.

The Ghana Investment Promotion Authority is also mandated to boost local enterprise by supporting Ghanaian businesses to scale up and participate meaningfully in the investment ecosystem.

These are bold steps to accelerate economic growth, create jobs, and position Ghana as the leading investment hub in West Africa.

For millions of African small businesses, many led by women and young people — selling across a border still means slow payments, costly transfers and no way to prove their track record to a bank in another country.

On 18 July in New York, the Secretariat and the ADI Foundation signed a Strategic Partnership Agreement creating a joint venture to build the digital infrastructure that changes this: Africa-owned, built on open standards, and designed to cut the cost of cross-border settlement of payments by up to 90 per cent.

Over time, it will let businesses leverage what they already own, stock, invoices, certified assets, something so far possible only to a very limited extent across Africa.

No budgetary commitments from African governments. Over US$1 billion to be mobilised jointly. Corridor pilots from late 2026.
One African market requires African-owned digital rails — and they are now being built.
