Last Friday, the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, who also serves as Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Hon. Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, laid before Parliament a new Legislative Instrument to revoke L.I. 2462, the regulation that allowed mining in Ghana’s forest reserves.

This is a bold and commendable step toward protecting Ghana’s forests and advancing true environmental sustainability, and we commend the government for this.

Let’s count the days together towards the repeal.

🌍✊ International Day Against Monoculture Plantations – 21st September

Today, Youth Volunteers for Environment Ghana commemorates the International Day Against Monoculture Plantations in solidarity with the Okumaning Aboabo, Adansi, and Brewaniase communities.

This year’s commemoration took place in Okumaning Aboabo, where affected community members gathered to share their struggles, challenges, and success stories, while charting a way forward in resisting destructive monoculture.

Through placards, voices, and unity, the people reminded the world that:

🌱 “Communities resist, nature thrives.”

🌿 “Indigenous knowledge shows the way.”

💧 “Water is life, defend it.”

We believe that the strength of our communities lies in resistance, resilience, and protection of our land, forests, and biodiversity. Together, we are defending the rights of people and building a future where nature flourishes.

💚💛 We did not inherit the earth from our forefathers; we borrowed it in trust for our children.

Plantations are not forests but rather a desert dressed in green.

On September 21, 2025, we join communities in Okumaning Aboabo, Adanse, Brewaniase and worldwide to mark the International Day Against Monoculture Plantations. This day is not a celebration; it is a global alarm bell.

Monoculture plantations, vast expanses of a single crop, such as eucalyptus, pine, palm oil, or rubber, are not forests. They are green deserts that:

➡ Suffocate Biodiversity: Where a thriving ecosystem once stood, only silence remains. These plantations cannot support the rich web of life that native forests do.
➡ Drain and Poison Water Sources: They consume massive amounts of water and leach chemicals into the soil, leaving land barren and communities thirsty.
➡ Displace Communities: Indigenous and local peoples are often violently forced from their ancestral lands to make way for these profitable, yet destructive, projects.
➡ Fuel the Climate Crisis: They replace resilient, carbon-rich natural forests with fragile, single-species plots that are vulnerable to disease and fire.

Enough is enough. Our silence is their permission.

This September 21st, we RISE. We DENOUNCE. We DEMAND change.

HOW YOU CAN ACT:
✅ EDUCATE: Share this post. Talk about the difference between a forest and a plantation.
✅ AMPLIFY: Centre the voices of frontline communities fighting this daily battle.
✅ INVESTIGATE: Look into the supply chains of what you buy. Choose sustainable, community-led alternatives.
✅ MOBILIZE: Join or support local and global organisations fighting for land justice and real forests.

Together, we are not a single voice, but a chorus that cannot be ignored. Together, we are a forest.

Celebrating a Greener Tokokoe! 🌍 World Environment Day, June 5th, 2025, our vibrant Tokokoe community came together to honour our planet! With the theme for this year, 'Ending Global Plastic Pollution', from spirited discussions to hands-on learning, we turned awareness into action alongside dedicated community members and the brilliant pupils of Tokokoe RC Basic School and Tokokoe MA JHS.

✨ Here’s how we made an impact:
✅ Community Power Hour:
Community members dove deep into the hidden dangers of plastics in daily life, from health risks to soil pollution. Together, we explored practical swaps and pledged to reduce plastic dependency!

✅ Youth Ignition Session:
Our future leaders stole the show! Pupils engaged in interactive talks on curbing single-use plastics and mastered smart waste management through games and live demos. Their energy was Unstoppable!

📣 Why This Matters:
"When a community unites for the Earth, change isn’t just possible—it’s inevitable."
From elders sharing wisdom to children leading the charge, Tokokoe proved that every hand planted a seed for sustainability.
