News Report: Akosombo Dam Flood Victims in Tokpo Receive Donations from Sadaqa Train & Iqra Centre - Saturday, December 30, 2023
Sadaqa Train, a charitable organization dedicated to supporting the poor and needy nationwide for over a decade, took a significant step in their yearly outreach programs. They organized a fundraising and donation exercise to aid victims affected by the floods resulting from the Akosombo Dam Spillage.
In a collaborative effort, Sadaqa Train partnered with Iqra Educational Centre, an Islamic school based in Accra with three branches. The school, guided by its vision of nurturing responsible and compassionate adults, joined hands with Sadaqa Train in raising funds for the flood victims. Under the leadership of the founder and Director, Madam Aesha Khidir Adam, the school mobilized staff, students, and parents. Together, they raised over GHC 54,000, in addition to clothes, food items, and other essentials, to support the affected people of Tokpo in the Shai Osudoku District.
Selecting the Community:
Sadaqa Train sought the assistance of Umar Sanda of Citi FM/TV to identify a resettlement center for flood victims. Tokpo in the Shai Osudoku District was suggested, and Mr. I. Animle, the assemblyman of Tokpo electoral area, confirmed the presence of approximately 190 inhabitants at their resettlement center.
To better understand the needs and challenges faced by the victims, a team from Sadaqa Train and Iqra Centre conducted a reconnaissance trip on Friday, December 29, 2023. The team visited victims at the Tokpo R/C Basic School, engaging with the assemblyman and some victims.
Findings:
- There were over 300 people in the resettlement center, with approximately 190 current inhabitants from about six neighboring communities.
- Children, who used to cross a river to attend school, are currently on vacation. When in session, they study under trees as classrooms are occupied by flood victims.
- The major need in the center is water, costing over GHC 300 for a tank lasting about five days. Attempts to drill a borehole have been unsuccessful.
- Additional necessities include fish, cassava, corn dough, money for upkeep, and mattresses for those without.
Donation Exercise on Saturday 30-Dec-2023:
Sadaqa Train and Iqra Centre purchased donation items worth approximately GHC 30,000, including sachet water, exercise books, charcoal, cassava and corn dough, mackerel, sugar, detergents, baby diapers, sanitary pads, spaghetti, cooking oil, toiletries, stationery, biscuits, and play items.
The team arrived in Tokpo on 30th Dec 2023 at 10:30 am, meeting both center inhabitants and other flood victims in neighbouring villages. Cash donations of GHC 200 each were given to approximately 100 families. Money was allocated to fill poly tanks with water, ensuring its availability for the victims. Food items were distributed room by room to guarantee they reached the intended recipients. The victims were encouraged to start small businesses to earn a living to sustain themselves in the long-term.
The assemblyman expressed gratitude for the generosity, assuring the team that he would continue to try to mobilise more support for the victims. He extended his prayers for ongoing support to alleviate their burdens and aid in their transition back to normalcy. Individuals and organisations are encouraged to reach out to Tokpo and other flood affected communities. God bless us all.
