TVET is not a Preserve for People who are Academically Poor!

Centre for TVET Advocacy and Empowerment Projects - Ctveta EmP respond to Hon. Haruna Iddrisu (MP and Minister for Education)

Centre For TVET Advocacy and Empowerment Projects has leaned of a rather unfortunate statement made by the Minister for Education suggesting that people who are deficient academically have a place in TVET.

This statement by the Hon Minister is not only unfortunate but also reckless considering the efforts being made to change the public perception about TVET. It will further worsen the already struggling sector in attracting more youth.

The idea that TVET is only for students who struggle academically is a misconception. TVET provides pratical skills and training which requires people with high academic prowess to excel.

Due to its hands on and pratical approach, graduates are prepared for the job market which helps address the skills gab challenge.

While some argue that TVET has traditionally been seen as a second option, this does not mean it is inferior. In fact, TVET is becoming increasingly valued due to its potential in facilitating industrial transformation for economic growth and job creation.

In the advent of the 4th industrial revolution, STEM and TVET graduates are in high demand. TVET programs are being revamped to include innovation making it more rigorous and valuable.

TVET is a highly valuable and viable educational pathway that offers students a range of benefits and opportunities.

It cannot be the case that it is seen as a domain for academically challenged students or professionals.

Is the Hon Minister telling us that, he will be comfortable sitting in an aircraft produced and serviced by an academically poor person, or drive a car manufactured and serviced by an academically poor person, or contract the services of an academically challenged artisan?

We are seeking to build and improve on public perception of TVET and statements like this should not be made by anyone talk less a Minister responsible for Education.

TVET is the way to minimize if not eliminate unemployment. We need to imbibe the interest of TVET in our youths. That will be the only way unemployment can be dealt with.

For too long, TVET has been relegated to the background in our national education reform agenda. This is why I am impressed with government’s commitment and investment in this sector in recent times. The investments in this sub sector will be a welcome boost to our economic and industrial transformation efforts. It’s my hope that parents do not subscribe to the negative narrative that TVET is meant for academically weak students but encourage their children to take up TVET programs instead. I made these observations during the recent tour of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Education at selected TVET institutions and universities in the Greater Accra, Central, Western, Ashanti and Eastern Regions of Ghana.
