Statement of the Georgian National Platform on Europe Day
The Georgian National Platform reaffirms its steadfast commitment to the European future of Georgia and the historic choice of the Georgian people - to become a full-fledged member of the European family. The common European values of Georgians and nations of the European Union are individual liberty, national sovereignty, the rule of law and democratic governance.
European integration is not merely a geopolitical choice for Georgia; it is a historic decision of the Georgian people and the only viable path toward a dignified and prosperous life of a human being. For this reason, the current setback in Georgia’s rapprochement with the European Union is particularly alarming.
Today, the operating environment for civil society organizations has been significantly constrained. Recently adopted laws have deprived them of access to essential resources. The activities of political parties and expressions of dissent are increasingly restricted. Moreover, official formats and technical cooperation between the European Union and Government of Georgia are being hindered because of democratic backsliding.
Europe Day reminds us that European unity has created one of the most successful systems in the world – one that ensures both freedom and prosperity, while continuously striving to strengthen them.
We call for Georgia to return to its European, democratic path and not miss the historic opportunity to join the ongoing processes of EU enlargement.
