Researchers have developed a groundbreaking way to make HIV visible inside the white blood cells where it hides, potentially paving the way to fully clear the virus from the body. HIV’s ability to remain dormant inside these cells has been a major obstacle in curing the infection because current treatments can’t eliminate this hidden reservoir.
Using mRNA technology similar to that in Covid-19 vaccines, the team created a new type of fat-based nanoparticle, called LNP X, that can deliver mRNA into the specific white blood cells housing HIV. This mRNA instructs the cells to reveal the hidden virus. Earlier attempts to deliver mRNA to these cells failed because they wouldn’t absorb the particles, but this new design overcomes that barrier.
In laboratory tests using cells from HIV patients, the researchers were amazed at how effectively the virus was exposed, calling the results “night and day” compared to previous efforts. While this breakthrough doesn’t yet clear the virus, it offers a promising step toward new treatments that could combine this technology with other therapies to eliminate HIV completely.
