Rue Norvins is one of the oldest surviving streets in Montmartre, and it shows exactly how this hilltop neighborhood changed from a rural village to one of the most famous artistic districts in the world. In the early 1900s, when the first photo was taken, Montmartre was still outside the limits of Paris. It looked and felt like a small countryside town, with dirt roads, simple houses, and a quiet atmosphere. Painters such as Picasso, Utrillo, and Toulouse-Lautrec lived or worked nearby, and they used the area’s narrow streets and everyday life as inspiration for their art.
The street itself is named after Pierre Norvins, a historian of Napoleon. But its importance comes from what surrounds it: tiny alleys, steep staircases, and cafés that became meeting places for artists. One of the best-known spots on Rue Norvins is Le Consulat, a café that has existed here since the 19th century and was visited by many famous painters. Even today, its appearance has barely changed, which is why the whole street still feels frozen in time.
A major transformation happened after the Sacré-Cœur Basilica was built on top of the hill between 1875 and 1914. It quickly became one of Paris’s biggest landmarks, and Rue Norvins became one of the main paths leading visitors through old Montmartre. The houses were renovated, shops opened, and the area became much more lively. But the street’s layout, its curve, and its village-like charm remained almost identical.
Today, Rue Norvins is a mix of history and tourism. It is home to artists who still set up their easels nearby on Place du Tertre, traditional restaurants, and small boutiques. Even with the crowds, it keeps the feeling of the Montmartre that existed over a century ago.
