The Lost Georgian King: Archaeologists Discover the Tomb of Ashot the Great Beneath Gevhernik Fortress

High in the misty mountains of northeastern Türkiye, where emerald valleys carve through the rugged Artvin landscape, an ancient fortress has revealed one of the most remarkable discoveries in recent archaeology. Beneath the crumbling remains of the Petrus and Paulus Church inside Gevhernik (Ardanuç) Fortress, researchers have uncovered the long-lost tomb of Georgian King Ashot the Great, a 9th-century monarch who shaped the destiny of the Caucasus.

The discovery, confirmed by archaeologists from Van Yüzüncü Yıl University and the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism, ends a historical mystery that endured for more than a thousand years.

“We’ve scientifically confirmed the tomb chamber of King Ashot,” says Dr. Osman Aytekin, head of the excavation team. “Although no human remains were preserved, the chamber’s form, location, and historical evidence leave no doubt — this is where the great Georgian king was laid to rest.”

Pompeii, a large frescoed banquet hall with megalography dedicated to the procession of Dionysus emerged

📍More than a century after the discovery of the Villa of the Mysteries, during recent excavations conducted in the central area of the Pompeii Archaeological Park, in insula 10 of Regio IX, a large banquet hall decorated with a monumental frieze with almost life-size figures, or a "megalography“ (from the Greek megálos ”large“ and graphía ”painting"), emerged. The frieze, which decorates three walls of the room while the fourth faced a garden, depicts a lively Dionysian procession.

📍The scene depicts the procession of Dionysus, god of wine: Bacchae, painted either as dancers or as proud hunters, young satyrs with characteristic pointed ears play the double flute.

📍In the center of the composition, a woman accompanied by an old Silenus holding a flashlight stands out: she is an initianda, that is, a mortal woman about to be initiated into the mysteries of Dionysus through a nocturnal ritual.

📍Archaeologists have named this dwelling the House of Thiasos, in reference to the festive procession of the god Dionysus. In antiquity, several cults, including the Dionysian cult, were reserved exclusively for those facing an initiation, as suggested by the Pompeii frieze. These cults were known as “mystery” cults precisely because their teachings were accessible only to initiates. They often promised worshippers a destiny of happiness both in life and in the afterlife.

“The bridge connecting Tsaghveri and Tsemi and the Eiffel Tower in Paris were both built by the same constructor – Gustave Eiffel. 🚂

🚂 The railway bridge connecting Tsaghveri and Tsemi was built at the request of Mikhail Romanov. Its construction began in 1897 over the Tshemisquala River. The bridge’s installation was carried out by the engineer Besarion Kheburi. In January 1902, the first ‘Kukushka’ train passed through the narrow-gauge railway line from Borjomi to Bakuriani.

🚂 In 2017, the ‘Eiffel Bridge’ was granted the status of a cultural heritage immovable monument.

Renovated Notre-Dame reopens after 5 years since a ruinous fire

Five years after a runaway fire devoured its roof, a renovated Notre-Dame Cathedral reopened its doors on Saturday, its centuries-old bell ringing in an emotional rebirth for one of the world’s most recognized monuments and a cornerstone of European culture and faith.

On 15 April 2019, a structural fire broke out in the roof space of Notre-Dame de Paris.

By the time the fire was extinguished, the cathedral's wooden spire (flèche) had collapsed, most of the wooden roof had been destroyed, and the cathedral's upper walls were severely damaged. Extensive damage to the interior was prevented by the vaulted stone ceiling, which largely contained the burning roof as it collapsed. Many works of art and religious relics were moved to safety, but others suffered smoke damage, and some of the exterior art was damaged or destroyed. The cathedral's altar, two pipe organs, and three 13th-century rose windows suffered little or no damage.

Notre-Dame did not hold a Christmas Mass in 2019, for the first time since 1803.

Investigators in 2020 believed the fire to have been "started by either a cigarette or a short circuit in the electrical system".

Kula — A wine vessel with a long neck and round belly, primarily made of wood, but also of gourd (e.g., a calabash) or metal (silver, copper).

The neck of the kula gradually narrows towards the mouth, and during drinking, it emits a clinking sound. A noisy vessel like this was used in Georgian feasts for entertainment purposes. Sometimes, it was decorated with silver metalwork, and the gourd version was often adorned with a rope.

The classic type of kula is crafted with such skill that it provides a small stream of wine to the drinker.

The “kvakhi” kula, a simple-to-make vessel, was widespread, though its simplicity could sometimes acquire a noble appearance, often through its decoration. The Georgian love of wine motivated many to paint and decorate even the simplest kula. It is characteristic of the kula to make a “rak-rak” sound while drinking, which makes the process of drinking wine more enjoyable. Hence, it is said, “A Kakhetian man’s curse is that he will make his kula ‘rak-rak.’”

Silver and wooden kulas are considered precious vessels, and a large Georgian feast would be incomplete without one. A remarkable example of the historical significance of this vessel is an archaeological wooden kula found in western Georgia, dating back to the 8th century BCE.

After many years, along with other historic exhibits, visitors of the Shalva Amiranashvili State Museum of Art (located at #1 Lado Gudiashvili Street in Tbilisi) have a rare opportunity to see the unique Satkhe Monastery Iconostasis in the permanent exhibition of the Museum.

Satkhe Monastery (VIII-XI centuries) located in Georgia’s Bolnisi Municipality, Kazreti District, is distinguished by its unique carvings, impressive stone decor, wall painting (which is no longer readable), and an iconostasis, which is included in the treasure fund of a Georgian historian, archaeologist and public benefactor Ekvtime Takaishvili.

Notably, many years ago, Ekvtime Takaishvili himself took the iconostasis from Satkhe monastery, which was abandoned and doomed to destruction, and handed it over to the Society for the Spreading of Literacy among Georgians to protect it, after which it was transferred to the Art Museum.

Starting from Monday 22nd July 2024, the House of Livia on the Palatine Hill has reopened to the public after major restoration work. This historic private domus from the 1st century BC, brought to light by 19th-century excavations, is attributed to Livia. The house is considered part of the Augustan complex and reserved for Augustus' wife.

Mythical birthplace of Rome and home to the ancient emperors, the Palatine Hill plays a vital role in the story of the Eternal City. Houses of Augustus and Livia, homes to the crucial figure of Rome’s first emperor and his powerful wife over 2,000 years ago, are considered one of the most important discoveries in the history of Italy.
