Grave violations against children living in war-torn Yemen remain alarmingly high, increasing their vulnerability to famine and gender-based violence. In the absence of adequate support, many families are forced to sell their daughters for dowry payments to cope with the socioeconomic impact of the civil war. ⁠

A UN report revealed that r**e and other forms of sexual violence has increased by 70% in countries like Yemen, Somalia, Syria and Afghanistan after the start of their conflicts. The pandemic has made it increasingly difficult to reach and protect the most historically excluded girls in Yemen. ⁠

For the last three years TYTW, in partnership with Solidarios Sin Fronteras. ONG de ayuda en Yemen, has been providing critical humanitarian assistance in the form of clean water and nutritious breakfasts helping keep young girls enrolled in school and safe from famine and violence. ⁠

13-year-old Erica (aka DJ Switch) of Ghana and her foundation are working to eradicate child marriage.
Sub-Saharan Africa has the highest maternal mortality rate in the world – 533 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births, or 200,000 maternal deaths a year, according to UNICEF. This is over two thirds of all maternal deaths per year worldwide.
Erica says she wants to be a gynecologist when she is older because "there are not enough doctors to help these girls’. We must have educational talks across the globe explaining the rights of women and girls in order to cease all these bad practices..."
TYTW found that girls as young as 10, who had been subjected to female ge***al mutilation, are dying in childbirth due to lack of appropriate healthcare and because their already mutilated bodies are simply not mature enough to bear children.
"Children are easily swayed into harmful practices because they cannot read and understand that they have rights," Erica said.
