We are a small group of researchers from Saint Georges University and WINDREF, government workers from The Grenadian Ministry of Social Development (Roving Caregivers), and volunteers. We are conducting a research study, partly sponsored by Grand Challenges Canada, to show how positive discipline methods enhance children’s brain development. Violence has a negative impact on the development of the
brain during the first 1000 days of life and beyond – hence our name, “Saving Brains Grenada”. Our study, which targets families with children ages 0-3 yrs, aims to address and prevent harsh child-rearing practices and family violence. After an eight-week training course in Conscious Discipline (CD), as well as intensive training with CD’s founder Dr. Becky Bailey and her colleague Mindy Becker, the Roving Caregivers are now teaching weekly classes to parents in their homes, using the Conscious Discipline method. These individual classes will be reinforced by our colorful mobile resource unit travelling throughout the country offering community group classes.
