The Partnership Initiative for Sustainable Land Management (PISLM) is pleased to provide internship experience to two Agricultural Engineering students from EARTH University in Costa Rica: Jamaal J. Lewis of Grenada and Gloria Edward Mwendo of Tanzania.

Through this internship, the students are gaining practical exposure to sustainable land management, soil health, climate resilience, and the application of innovative agricultural practices within Grenada’s unique island context.

Their placement with PISLM, including work connected to the SoilCare project, supports learning that bridges academic training with real-world environmental and agricultural challenges.

Jamaal brings a strong background in agriculture and food science, technical training, and a deep commitment to advancing agriculture in Grenada and beyond. Gloria contributes a global perspective shaped by her experiences in Tanzania, Costa Rica, and Grenada, with a focus on sustainable agriculture, soil management, and climate-resilient solutions.

PISLM is happy to support the professional growth of these emerging agricultural leaders and to provide an environment where they can learn, contribute, collaborate, and apply their knowledge to sustainable development priorities in the Caribbean.

🇯🇲 Jamaica is calling for action, implementation and innovative financing to address land degradation, drought, sustainable agriculture, land restoration and water security.

Hon. Delroy Williams- Minister of State in the Ministry of Local Government and Community Development, emphasized that access to financing is critical for Small Island Developing States as they move from discussion to delivery under the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification.

The roundtable brought together government ministers, senior officials, development partners and technical experts from SIDS and international organisations to discuss land restoration, climate resilience, sustainable land management and practical approaches to achieving land degradation neutrality.

🇰🇳 Strengthening Water Security and Drought Resilience in Saint Kitts and Nevis

Hon Dr Joyelle Clarke, Minister of Sustainable Development, Environment and Climate Action and Constituency for Saint Kitts and Nevis, highlighted the country’s growing drought and water security challenges, noting 12 drought events over the past 20 years and a current active drought warning driven by a 44% reduction in rainfall.

Speaking at the Ministerial Dialogue on Drought Resilience at UNCCD COP17 in Mongolia, Minister Clarke outlined national investments to strengthen water security, including the National Water Policy, the Green Climate Fund-supported SKN TransWater Project, expanded well capacity, water storage, and the Bastia Desalination Plant, which have helped increase access to 24/7 water supply from 25% to 70% of the population.

She also called for stronger regional action and welcomed the proposed Caribbean Drought Initiative through PISLM as an opportunity to strengthen preparedness, investment and resilience across Caribbean SIDS. 🇰🇳💧
