World Environment Day 2026 focuses on climate change-on the urgent signals the Earth is sending and the signals we choose to send back. The question is no longer if change comes, but how we guide it and how fast it happens.

week, Executive Director for the Partnership Initiative for Sustainable Land Management, Dr. Ronen Francis, joined the 13th OECS Council of Ministers: Environmental Sustainability (COM:ES 13) in the Commonwealth of Dominica, addressing the escalating environmental and climate challenges confronting Small Island Developing States (SIDS).

Dr. Francis’ participation underscores the critical importance of Integrated Land Management in strengthening climate resilience and bringing attention to the need for sustainable land and soil practices to tackle land degradation.

The two-day engagement was hosted under the chairmanship of Hon. Cozier Frederick, Minister for Environment, Rural Modernisation, Kalinago Upliftment and Constituency Empowerment of the Commonwealth of Dominica and covered topics such as regional resilience, biodiversity protection, climate adaptation, sustainable financing, and environmental governance.

The Partnership Initiative for Sustainable Land Management (PISLM), was pleased to join the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture’s (IICA’s) partners meeting in Grenada yesterday. This special meeting was part of the activities held yesterday as part of their CCRAF on the Road initiative- Grenada leg.
Project Manager for the CSIDS SOILCARE project, Trevor Thompson joined the meeting which discussed collaboration as a method of leveraging local human and financial resources in the Caribbean for agricultural development.

The conversation highlighted the importance of a programmatic approach to project ex*****on for specific such as water management, soil and land degradation and the use of technology like drones for fertilizer application.
PISLM was pleased to join other partners such as the Climate Agriculture and Rural Enterprise Development Programme (SAEP) and the Global Water Partnership-Caribbean (GWP-C) and looks forward to continue working with IICA and all developmental partners across the region.

πŸ‘‰April 20–23, regional technicians from Caribbean SIDS, joined other representatives from Latin America in Panama City for a critical capacity-building workshop focused on combating desertification, land degradation, and drought (DLDD).

This training, supported by UNCCD, PISLM, UNEP, and the GEF, empowered participants to move beyond using default datasets.

As PISLM Project Manager Tricianna Maharaj noted, this cycle is a β€œdefining moment” for using data as a strategic tool for regional investment and planning.

Key Highlights of the workshop last week included:

♦️Focus on high-quality reporting via the PRAIS 4 Platform.

♦️Knowledge exchange on data integration and validation.

♦️A shift toward true national ownership of the reporting process.

We are thankful for the support of our partners-UNEP, FAO, Conservation International, and Apacheta, ensuring that the Caribbean remains at the forefront of sustainable land management.

The reconnaissance mission (Mar 30–31, 2026) is helping shape the future of climate-resilient agriculture in Jamaica.

πŸ“ Visits to 𝐀𝐦𝐒𝐭𝐲 π‡πšπ₯π₯ 𝐀𝐠𝐫𝐨 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐀 (St. Catherine) and π‹π¨π«π’π¦πžπ«π¬ (Trelawny) provided key insights into Jamaica’s diverse soils, agro-ecological zones, and farming systems.

ππˆπ’π‹πŒ, as a key regional partner, is supporting sustainable land management and practical solutions through the ADOPT Caribbean Project to deliver:

βœ… Healthier soils

πŸŒ±πŸ’§ The Carriacou ILM Project, executed by the PISLM, funded by the Global Environment Facility 🌍 and implemented with UNEP support 🀝, aims to improve farmers’ access to water for irrigation 🚜 and livestock πŸ„πŸ.

πŸ—οΈ The project restored the Dumfries cistern, a crucial water storage system πŸ’¦, and plans to install a solar pump system β˜€οΈπŸ”‹ to maximize its capacity.

🌿 This initiative addresses land degradation 🌍⚠️ and promotes sustainable land management practices 🌱 in Carriacou πŸ‡¬πŸ‡©.
