The adoption of a new international labour standard on decent work in the platform economy marks a significant milestone for workers around the world and a major achievement of the 114th International Labour Conference.

Speaking on behalf of CARICOM at the closing session of the Conference, Grenada's Labour Commissioner, Mrs. Sparkle Grenade-Courtney, underscored the importance of this landmark Convention for small developing states navigating rapid technological change. The new standard affirms fundamental rights at work, promotes transparency in the use of digital technologies, and strengthens protections for platform workers, while providing the flexibility needed to accommodate different levels of development.

The Grenada Public Workers' Union welcomes this historic advancement and joins with workers' organisations across the region in recognising the importance of ensuring that innovation and technology serve people, safeguard dignity at work, and promote decent employment opportunities for all.

As the world of work continues to evolve, the GPWU remains committed to advocating for strong labour protections, social justice, and workers' rights in every sector of the economy.

The Caribbean Public Services Association has welcomed what is being described as a historic victory for workers’ rights following the recent International Court of Justice ruling affirming that the right to strike is a fundamental labour right linked to Freedom of Association under ILO Convention 87.

The ruling represents a major moment for workers and trade unions across the region, reinforcing the importance of collective action, social dialogue, and the protection of workers’ voices in the workplace.

For trade unions throughout the Caribbean, the decision strengthens longstanding efforts to defend dignity, fairness, and justice for working people. It also serves as a reminder that the right to organise and take collective action remains central to democracy and decent work.

As the labour movement continues to evolve in a changing world of work, this landmark ruling stands as a powerful affirmation that workers’ rights are human rights.

Nurses remain at the heart of healthcare, providing care, comfort, advocacy and strength in some of life’s most difficult moments. Their dedication and commitment continue to make a lasting impact on individuals, families and communities across Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique.

Although the day has passed, the Grenada Public Workers’ Union shares this message from the President of the Grenada Nurses Association and 2nd Vice President of the union, Sister Nekisha St. Bernard, on the observance of International Nurses Day 2026.

The GPWU is proud to stand with our nurses, who form an important part of our Union family, as they continue to serve with professionalism, compassion and resilience.
