Statement on the Passing of Journalist Linda Straker
Issued on behalf of A Grouping of Civil Society Organisations

A Grouping of Civil Society Organisations expresses profound sadness at the passing of Ms. Linda Straker, one of Grenada’s most principled journalists.

She was widely recognised as a voice of professionalism, knowledge, and fearless communication, with a mastery of parliamentary rules and a deep commitment to keeping the public informed and engaged in national affairs. Colleagues and officials alike described her as a remarkable media personality, a proud Grenadian, and a national voice whose contributions will not be forgotten.

Her passing is not only a personal loss to her family, friends, and colleagues, but also a significant loss to Grenada’s public sphere.

The fourth estate plays an essential role in safeguarding our society-holding power to account, ensuring transparency, and protecting the public’s right to know. Ms. Straker embodied these principles with unwavering dedication. Her fearless pursuit of truth strengthened accountability in Grenada and upheld the values that civil society organisations work tirelessly to defend.

A Grouping of CSOs deeply appreciated the value she brought to national discourse. Her work consistently elevated public understanding, encouraged higher standards of governance, and reinforced the importance of a free, independent, and ethical press.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, colleagues, and the entire media community. May her legacy continue to inspire journalists, advocates, and citizens committed to building a more transparent and just Grenada.

May she rest in peace.

St. Lucia- In a decision of the High Court, it was declared that sections 132 and 133 of the Criminal Code of Saint Lucia criminalizing consensual same s*x intimacy in private contravene the right to protection of the law.

ECADE welcomes this historic decision affirming the dignity and humanity of LGBTQ+ individuals in Saint Lucia. It marks the fourth major decision in a regional, five-country legal challenge led by ECADE since 2020, following similar rulings in Antigua and Barbuda (June 2022), Saint Kitts and Nevis (August 2022) and Barbados (December 2022).
