Celebrating Caribbean Stories, Young Authors, and Community!
This past Sunday, Dr. Efua Akoma (Akoma Kazi), The Belmont Foundation and Belmont Estate proudly launched “Grenada’s: Island Life, Where Family, Culture & Farms Thrive,” a collection of children’s books written by children that celebrates the rich culture, traditions, families, and agricultural heritage across the Caribbean.
Led by Dr. Efua Akoma and Think and Play Village, this project was made possible through the Caribbean Culture Fund and its fiscal sponsor, Le Centre d’Art. This Intra-Caribbean project brought together partners from Grenada, Saint Lucia, and Dominica with a shared goal: increasing opportunities for first-time children’s authors to tell stories rooted in their own lives, communities, and cultures.
One of the most exciting outcomes of this project is the emergence of two brand-new young authors Kaedi Ettienne, who is 13 and Meghan Noel who is 14 years old! Their voices, creativity, and unique perspectives remind us that young people have important stories to tell, and we encourage everyone to check out their work and celebrate their accomplishments.
A special thank you to Belmont Estate for their collaboration and participation in this project. Their commitment to agriculture, sustainability, and preserving Caribbean heritage provided invaluable inspiration and learning opportunities. Belmont Estate continues to serve as a model for how sustainable farming, cultural preservation, and community development can work hand in hand to strengthen our region for future generations. This project was created because Caribbean children deserve to see themselves reflected in the books they read. Through stories about island life, family traditions, and farming, we are helping preserve our culture while inspiring the next generation of readers, writers, and changemakers.
