Music is a big part of , & all 4 cycles have references to angels singing & liturgical music. But songs unique to the plays are incredibly rare- in fact, while Coventry's cycle has only 2 texts left, only 1 of which has enough to be performed, with it is the one example of a mystery plays song: the Coventry Carol.

It's ! So we're sending love to all the amazing, brilliant SMs in the theatre industry, especially the people we have been so immensely privileged to work with here at HIDden. In the audience you barely see them, but they're the backbone of any production, the person who knows what's going on, & whatever needs doing, they already did it 20 minutes ago. If stage managers ran the world, most of our problems would be solved. So if you know a stage manager, today's the day to let them know just how incredible they are!

One of the brilliant touches in "The Noah Project", our co-production in 2012, was director Charles Hunt's decision to have Mrs Noah skin an actual fish fillet onstage. It made a bit of a mess & we had to be careful about costumes, but she's such a down-to-earth character, it was a lovely touch!

The plays about Mary are particularly interesting because they rely more on Apocryphal books & tradition than biblical text. They've always been something of a barometer for performing & interpreting the . The Pope's 1950 declaration coming only a year before the major revival of the plays in 1951 was purely coincidental; the UK was still too Protestant to bring back these very Catholic plays.

After our debut at the London Museum, we were able to bring "Kings All Comely of Kind", our pair of medieval nativity plays, to an audience in York. Performed at the lovely ancient St Mary Bishophill Junior, here is one of our shepherds presenting gifts to Mary during a rehearsal.

How long have the modern been performed on waggons? Not quite since the beginning... but maybe for longer than you'd expect! They were introduced due to the great success of 1951, but they stayed as a small side event for nearly forty years.

It's fascinating how modern can almost erase the memory of older traditions! How many other things- in theatre or otherwise- do we assume have always been a certain way, but history tells us something quite different?
