โน๏ธ Update: Swans nesting at Derwenthorpe
A pair of swans are currently nesting on the estate pond at Derwenthorpe. This is a sensitive time for them, as swans usually lay eggs between March and April.
North Yorkshire Police have received reports of people disturbing and intentionally trying to harm the swans and their nest. The swans and their nests are protected by law under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 which means it is a criminal offence to injure, kill or interfere with them.
As a result of these incidents, police officers will be carrying out regular patrols around the pond.
What residents should do:
๐ Please keep a respectful distance when passing the pond.
๐ Make sure children are supervised and understand not to disturb the swans or their nest.
๐ Be aware that swans can become territorial during nesting season from April to June and may act defensively if approached.
๐ Report any antisocial or criminal behaviour to the police.
Thank you for helping to keep wildlife and residents safe.
