St Nicks St Nicks, the green heart of York, is a former landfill site transformed into a thriving nature reserve. Registered CIO charity no. 1153739

St Nicks (registered as 'Friends of St Nicholas Fields') is the green heart of York - a centre for nature and green living. We started by transforming a former landfill site into a thriving Local Nature Reserve. We continue to manage it with the help of over 150 volunteers, for the benefit of both wildlife and our visitors. We are based at St Nicks Environment Centre, a showcase of sustainable des

ign features. From this base, we run projects and services that help to make York more sustainable. These include a low emissions kerbside recycling collection, environmental education programme, corporate volunteering days and a programme of events. The Centre is available for booking for meetings, seminars and other events.

We've got some amazing news to share! Urban Wild Youth Group have been shortlisted for a York Press Community Pride Award for โ€˜Best Community Projectโ€™ ๐Ÿงก๐Ÿฅณ

Thanks so much to the Community Pride Awards for recognising the outstanding impact of Urban Wild - both for the young people involved and the environment they have helped๐Ÿ‘

With funding from the North Yorkshire Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner, this group of youngsters from a mix of backgrounds worked together to make a positive difference to our nature reserve in Tang Hall. They created a trail to educate visitors about the reserve and the animals who call it home - along with tips on how to we can all better protect nature.

โ€œUrban Wild was born out of a desire to engage with young people and increase their sense of pride in their local area. It is absolute testament to what you can achieve if you allow them the freedom to connect with nature and the autonomy to make decisions. Iโ€™m so grateful to the Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner, our team who have worked so hard to develop and deliver the project, and crucially, the young people for all their enthusiasm and for producing work that will inspire others to look after nature.โ€ - Vicky, CEO of St Nicks.

(Urban Wild is taking a pause over summer, but there will be a chance to get involved later in the year - we'll share more on here or you can email [email protected] to sign up to our family mailing list and be notified via email).

๐ŸŒž Hot Weather Update! ๐ŸŒž

With temperatures set to rise this week, we're making a few changes to help keep everyone safe, comfortable, and having fun. Some groups and sessions may have adjusted times, locations, or activities to make the most of shaded areas and cooler conditions.

๐Ÿ“ฒ Please check for updates before you travel so you have the latest information.

๐Ÿ’ง Remember to bring water, wear suitable clothing, and stay sun-safe.

โ™ป๏ธ Recycling collections may occur earlier than usual so our teams finish before the worst of the heat. Please put your recycling out the night before if possible.

Thank you for your flexibilityโ€”we're looking forward to seeing you while keeping everyone cool and protected! ๐Ÿ˜Ž๐ŸŒณ

The best waste is the waste we never create in the first place.

Before you throw something away, ask yourself:
โœ… Can it be reused?
โœ… Can it be repaired?
โœ… Can it be donated?
โœ… Can it be recycled?

Small changes add up, what small steps can you take to bring less stuff into your house? What's one item you've repaired or reused recently? Let us know in the comments!

One of our amazing Student Action Volunteers has won a Student Community and Volunteering Award! ๐ŸŒŸ

We nominated Charlie because of his unwavering dedication in supporting us to manage and improve St Nicks nature reserve for wildlife and our local community. Even through the wet winter when volunteer numbers were low, Charlie was always getting stuck in with a smile!

We are so grateful for his amazing efforts and think you will agree that this award is really well deserved. Thank you so much Charlie!

Another brilliant opportunity to get involved with volunteering at St Nicks! ๐Ÿ›๐Ÿ“ข

We are looking for 'Youth Group Volunteers' to help support our nature-based sessions for toddlers and primary-aged children. If you think you could help capture children's imagination through fun activities that help them connect to the natural world and live more sustainably, we'd love to hear from you! ๐Ÿ’š

This is a great opportunity to gain practical experience in facilitating outdoor activities for children and young people that enhance their wellbeing and help them develop their confidence and skills.
