York parents, we need you!

We are working with community research group Lived Insights as part of their work into what makes ‘The Best Start in life’. We are collaborating on a project around antenatal education (the information you receive during your pregnancy to help you prepare for the pregnancy, birth and early parenthood).

We are looking for between 6 and 8 parents to be part of a focus group where we will think about what information you received, what you wanted and where the trusted voice of antenatal education came from for you and your family.

What is the Maternity Survey? 🤰🏽 📝

It is a survey developed by the MNVP and York and Scarborough Maternity and Neonatal Services to capture the experience of the entire maternity journey. 👶✨

Why has it been launched? 🚀

Your feedback is really important. 💬 It helps York and Scarborough Maternity and Neonatal Services to understand what has worked well for you 👍 and how you feel your care could be improved. 🌱 By offering everyone the chance to share their experience, they can listen 👂, learn 📚, and act on what you tell them to make maternity care better. 💙

When do I get the survey? ⏰

You will be asked to complete the survey after you have been discharged from your community midwife. 🏡

How do I fill it in? 🖊️

There is QR code on page 59 of your personalised care plan 📄, or you can speak to your midwife about how to access it. 🗣️ If you are unable to access it digitally 💻 speak with your midwife about other options. 🔄

A chance to share your experience with maternity and neonatal services, ask any questions, hear about our main themes of feedback, and all about any local ongoing projects and updates within maternity and neonatal services.

✈️ Flying during pregnancy – we want to hear from you! 🤰

We’re working with the trust to gather feedback from service users about their experiences of flying during pregnancy, including your needs, experiences and expectations.

Your feedback will help inform discussions within the directorate meeting.

This is part of a wider review being undertaken around fit to fly information, the trust has shared the following general information around flying:

💜We would advise you to contact your airline to find out what information they require and to contact your GP well in advance of your travel dates if you require a letter, something midwives are currently unable to provide. Please be aware GPs may charge for this service.
💜General information for travel in pregnancy is to ensure you hold appropriate travel insurance and that your insurers are aware you are pregnant.
💜During flights, mobilise regularly, avoid caffeine and keep hydrated to reduce the risk of blood clots.

You may have heard about the Thirlwall Inquiry into neonatal care at the Countess of Chester Hospital. While this relates to another Trust, we understand that national news can sometimes cause worry. Staff at York and Scarborough Hospitals are dedicated to providing safe, high‑quality care for your baby. The Maternity & Neonatal Voices Partnership (MNVP) works closely with the Trust to ensure that families’ voices are heard and that care continues to improve. If you have any concerns about your baby’s care, please speak with the team looking after you. They are there to listen and support you.

If at any point you feel your concerns are not being heard, you can use Martha’s Rule to request an urgent review. This is a national safety initiative designed to empower families and ensure worries are acted on quickly.

🚨 Martha's Rule

❓ What is it? It is a national safety initiative across all hospitals to ensure worries are acted upon quickly 🏥

💬 What is it for? Martha's rule is there to support families and staff to request an urgent second opinion if they feel their concerns are not being heard and the condition of the patient is deteriorating

📞 How do I use it? The critical care number is displayed around the unit. When you call that number a member of critical care will ask you to outline your concerns, take your contact details and then call you back after looking into things. Posters are up around the hospitals so this number should be visible 📱

🚫 What is it not? It is not a place to register any complaints or feedback, this can be done through PALS or by speaking to your care team.
