👶 New on our postnatal wards: Self-administration of medication
Eligible women and birthing people can now keep and manage their own paracetamol and ibuprofen while in hospital. It’s safe, supported by staff, and designed to help you access pain relief when you need it.

💊 What is self-administration?
Self-administration means keeping your own paracetamol and ibuprofen with you on the postnatal ward and taking them when you need them, rather than waiting for a member of staff to bring them to you.

👜 What will happen?
If you’re suitable for self-administration, a member of the maternity team will explain how it works, answer any questions, and ensure this is documented on your digital record.

✅ Is it safe?
Yes. Self-administration is only offered when it is safe and appropriate for you. Staff will explain what to take, when to take it, and remain available if you need support.

❤️ Why is it being introduced?
The aim is to help you manage your pain relief more quickly and independently, without having to wait for medication rounds. It puts you in control of your care.

🏷️ Does it matter which brand?
No. Different brands may look different, but the active medicine is the same, you just need to bring them in their original packaging. If you’re unsure about any medication, please ask a member of staff.

📖 What do I need to do?
Take your medication exactly as advised and record when you’ve taken it. Keep it stored safely and let staff know if you have any concerns.

⏰ What if I’m admitted without having any with me?
Don’t worry. The team is here to help, let your midwife know and they can support you with access the pain relief you need.

A message from York and Scarborough MNVP
We know that the recent publication of the Nottingham and Amos reports may cause concern for women, birthing people and families using maternity services.

At York and Scarborough MNVP, we want to reassure you that we are working closely with York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust to review the findings and recommendations emerging from these reports. As the independent voice of service users, we are committed to ensuring that the experiences, concerns and priorities of women and families remain at the heart of ongoing improvement work.

The Trust is already on an active improvement journey, and we will continue to provide constructive challenge, support and feedback to help ensure maternity care is safe, compassionate and centred around the needs of local families.

We encourage anyone using maternity services to share their experiences with us. Your voice matters and helps shape the future of care across our area.

💜 York and Scarborough MNVP – championing the voices of women, birthing people and families.

Short surveys: At the MNVP we have designed some short surveys for those of you that would like to feedback but don’t want, or don’t feel able, to go into detail. These surveys will help us to identify main areas of care that are either highly valuable and well received, or areas that you feel need to be highlighted as areas for improvement. There is one for maternity and one for neonatal, we’d be really grateful if you could complete the survey(s), they take less than 2 minutes.
