A large group of YPS members visited Lyminge, Kent, on 17 May. A leading local antiquarian, Rob Baldwin, described the history of the parish church from its foundation to the present day.

In 2019, archaeological investigations revealed the outline of the original church, established by Queen Ethelburga in the 7th century. The current church was built in the 11th century. Several Norman windows were uncovered in the 19th century by Canon Robert Jenkins during his own investigations into the history of the church, which is dedicated to St Mary and St Ethelburga.

After Rob's fascinating talk, members were treated to afternoon tea by another Lyminge resident, Liz Coleman - whose brother happens to be our chair, David Harbourne!

We're likely to hear more about Ethelburga in 2027, as she was instrumental in founding the first York Minster in 627 CE.

YORK CENTRAL: lecture by Rob Auld, Construction Director for McLaren Property, 7 pm, Tuesday 14 April, Yorkshire Museum

York Central will be a brand new neighbourhood with over 2,500 homes, 1 million square feet of commercial space, playgrounds, parks, allotments and squares, with direct access to the station.

Rob Auld is pivotal to the development of York Central. His role involves coordinating, procuring and delivering an immensely complicated set of projects. This lecture is a great chance to hear what it means in engineering terms - and more widely, for the future of York.

Rob's lecture is hosted by the Yorkshire Philosophical Society and York Society of Engineers.
